Peoria Chiefs News Release

Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs recorded their third straight shutout as they cruised to a 2-0 win Thursday night over the Cedar Rapids Kernels. As the Chiefs celebrate their 30th Anniversary all season, this marks just the second time in franchise history the Chiefs have recorded three consecutive shutouts. The win puts the Chiefs at 28-32 as they look to complete the three-game sweep Friday night with first pitch at 7:00.

Zeke DeVoss got things started in the bottom of the first as he led off with a walk, and quickly advanced to second on a catching error by first baseman Trevor Hairgrove. Taiwan Easterling, who had three hits Wednesday, singled up the middle against Dan Reynolds to score DeVoss and give Peoria a 1-0 lead.

Cedar Rapids threatened in the second against Chiefs hurler Michael Jensen. After getting the leadoff man to ground out, Zachary Borenstein walked and Abel Baker reached on a fielding error by Paul Hoilman to put runners on the corners. Hairgrove was unable to bring home a run as he struck out before Chevy Clarke walked to load the bases. But Jensen bounced back to strike out Wendell Soto to keep the Kernels off the board.

The Chiefs got some insurance in the bottom of the eighth. Easterling walked with two outs, and followed with his 12th stolen base of the season to get into scoring position. Anthony Giansanti cashed in with a double down the left field line plating Easterling and doubling the Chiefs lead to 2-0.

Hunter Cervenka was on for his second inning of work in the top of the ninth looking to secure the victory. After striking out two in the top of the eighth, the left-hander set down Andy Workman, Carlos Lugo and Trevor Hairgrove on three-straight pop ups to end the ballgame.

Jensen (6-2) tossed five shutout innings allowing just one hit and three walks while striking out seven. Felix Pena hurled two innings in relief of Jensen, allowing two hits while striking out five. Cervenka recorded his first save of the season with two perfect innings out of relief, striking out a pair.

Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Michael Jensen (SP) - The right-handed turned in five shutout innings on the way to recording his team-leading sixth victory of the season. Jensen turned in five innings of one-hit baseball, walking three and striking out seven. Jensen now has the lowest ERA of any active Chiefs starting pitcher with a line of 2.32.
