River Bandits' Offense Goes Cold in 4-1 Loss to Cougars

June 7, 2012 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The Quad Cities River Bandits failed to deliver offensively Thursday night in a 4-1 loss against Kane County at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark in Geneva, IL. With the loss, Quad Cities fell three games out of first place in the Midwest League Western Division and 5.5 games back of the final playoff spot, with only ten games left to play in the first half.

The River Bandits did not score until the top of the seventh with two outs, when Roberto De La Cruz singled to score Anthony Garcia, who had walked earlier in the inning. This base-on-balls was one of just two issued by Kane County pitching on the night. Quad Cities did not have a leadoff batter in an inning reach until the eighth, when Luis Mateo drew the second, and final, walk by the River Bandits off reliever Michael Giovenco.

Quad Cities (29-31) fell behind early, when Cougars' third baseman Michael Antonio singled to center field in the first inning, scoring Jorge Bonifacio from third. Left-hander Dail Villanueva (3-4) worked out of the inning without allowing another run, and would last six innings and allow just two earned runs, scattering eight hits and walking one. He did not record a strikeout in a start for the first time in 2012.

Kane County (32-28) added another run in the fourth on a single to left field by Dean Espy that plated shortstop Orlando Calixte, who had doubled in the preceding at-bat. After the De La Cruz single cut the lead to 2-1, the Cougars answered back in the bottom of the seventh with two runs off right-hander Ricky Martinez. With two outs and two on, the Kane County designated hitter, Daniel Mateo, hit a double that scored Espy and Tim Ferguson. Mateo was thrown out at third trying to advance to end the inning.

Cougars' starter Robinson Yambati threw seven innings of one-run ball, and allowed just four base hits and one walk, while striking out five. Casey Rasmus and Luis Mateo, both of whom entered play with modest five-game hit streaks, combined to go 0-for-7 with one walk and three strikeouts. De La Cruz led the club offensively, going 2-for-4 with an RBI.

The River Bandits and Cougars will conclude their three-game series on Friday night at 6:35 p.m. Left-hander Jonathan Cornelius (1-1) is scheduled to start for Quad Cities and right-hander Angel Baez (1-1) is set to start for Kane County.
