Morehead City Marlins News Release

WILMINGTON, N.C. - The Morehead City Marlins (3-7) and Wilmington Sharks (6-4) split two seven-inning games as part of a double-header in Wilmington Thursday night, as the Sharks won game one 2-1, and the Marlins halted a four-game losing streak in game two with a 6-2 win.

The Marlins scored four runs with two outs in the third inning of game two. With Corey Bass and Damon Hoggard on second and first base, respectively, Sam Ott laced a triple to left field, scoring both runners. The next batter, Sal Annunziata, doubled to right field which scored Ott and then Annunziata scored on a single from Matt Anderson to make the score 4-0.

The score stayed the same until the top of the sixth, when again the Marlins plated a run with two outs. Ryan Cranmer singled and advanced to third on a single by Dalton Knight. Then Bass hit a slow grounder to third and beat it out at first base, scoring Cranmer from third to make the score 5-0. The Marlins knocked in one more run in the seventh inning before the Sharks answered with two runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Chris Franzese (1-1) earned the win in four innings of work, allowing just one hit and striking out three without giving up a run. Blaze Tart (0-1) absorbed the loss, giving up four runs on six hits in six innings of work.

The Marlins dropped a 2-1 decision in game one when they managed just three hits off Sharks' pitching. The Sharks scored in the bottom of the first when Aaron Preston knocked a solo home run to left field. The Sharks extended their lead in the bottom of the second behind Casey Goss and Andrew Valencia. Goss recorded a two-out single then stole both second and third base before Valencia delivered an RBI-single and the Sharks had a 2-0 lead.

That lead held until the top of the sixth inning when Geoff DeGroot doubled to right field and came around to score on a single off the bat of Jonathan Corbett. The Marlins put runners on first and second with one out, but the Sharks turned a double play to end the threat.

Ross Whitley (1-0) earned the win, allowing just one run on three hits in 5 1/3 innings. Brett Koehler (1-1) suffered the loss in his second appearance as a Marlin, giving up two runs on five hits in four innings. Andrew Brockett earned his first save, inducing a double play in the sixth inning before setting down the Marlins in order in the seventh.

The Marlins and Sharks are back at it tomorrow night at Big Rock Stadium in Morehead City. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. with Matt Sutor bringing the live broadcast on CPL WebPass beginning approximately 10 minutes prior to first pitch.

Notes: Preston was unsuccessful trying to steal home in the first inning of game two... Matt Wainman tossed two scoreless innings in relief of Koehler in game one... The Marlins did not commit an error in either game, marking three straight flawless defensive games.
