Kane County Cougars News Release

GENEVA, Ill. - Danny Mateo starred for the second straight night as his three hits and two runs batted in lifted the Kane County Cougars to a 4-1 victory over the Quad Cities River Bandits on Thursday night at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

With the Cougars (32-28) leading 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh, Mateo provided major insurance as he doubled Dean Espy and Tim Ferguson to the plate before getting thrown out at third, trying to stretch it into a triple.

With the extra cushion, Mike Giovenco (S, 2) swirled through the final two innings without allowing a run. Giovenco preserved the lead for Robinson Yambati (2-1), who reached a season-high seven innings while surrendering just a run on four hits. It wasn't until the seventh when Quad Cities (29-31) finally got on the board as Roberto De La Cruz singled home Anthony Garcia.

Kane County grabbed the lead early against Dail Villanueva (3-4). Mateo singled with one out before being retired on a fielder's choice off the bat of Jorge Bonifacio. After a Lane Adams single, Bonifacio scored on a knock by Michael Antonio. A two-out tally also scored in the fourth for the Cougars as Espy picked up a base hit to draw Orlando Calixte home.
