San Jose Giants News Release

SAN JOSE - The San Jose Giants scored twice in the bottom of the ninth inning and had the potential winning run at the plate with two outs, but saw their rally fall short in a 5-3 loss to the Modesto Nuts on Monday evening at Municipal Stadium. Modesto's Corey Dickerson and Jared Clark each homered while the duo combined to drive in all five runs to lead the Nuts offensively. The series-opening defeat dropped San Jose's overall record to 24-14 - two games ahead of the Bakersfield Blaze (21-15) for the top spot in the first half North Division race.

Dickerson (2-for-5, HR, 2 RBI) hit a two-run homer in the third inning while Clark (2-for-2, 2B, HR, 3 RBI) added a solo shot in the fifth as part of a 13-hit Modesto offensive attack.

The Nuts jumped on Giants starter Ryan Bradley for a run in the top of the first inning as Brett Tanos reached on an error with one out before Dickerson doubled to deep left center. Clark was up next and he lifted a sacrifice fly to center as Tanos came home to make it 1-0.

In the top of the third, Tanos drew a one-out walk before Dickerson stepped to the plate and belted a two-run homer to deep center extending the Modesto lead to 3-0.

Nuts starting pitcher Tyler Matzek had retired six straight San Jose batters until issuing a leadoff walk to Chris Lofton in the bottom of the third. After Lofton stole second, Ryan Lollis lined out to first and Joe Panik flied out to left. Adam Duvall was up next and he grounded a single into left plating Lofton to bring the Giants to within 3-1. Duvall's single was the first San Jose hit of the contest.

Matzek worked 4 1/3 innings during his stint on the mound yielding just one run on one hit. The former first round draft pick walked four and struck out five. The Giants left six runners on base, including four in scoring position, over the first five innings.

Bradley was able to work out of a bases loaded jam in the top of fourth inducing Dickerson to groundout ending the threat before giving up a leadoff homer to Clark in the fifth inning. Bradley returned to the mound in the sixth and promptly surrendered a leadoff double to Cristhian Adames before Rafael Ortega singled to put runners on the corners. Danny Sandbrink (1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 SO) was then summoned from the bullpen, but he allowed a two-out, RBI double to Clark as Modesto stretched their lead to 5-1.

San Jose managed only two hits over the first eight innings of the game. Nuts relievers Chad Rose (1 2/3 IP) and Kraig Sitton (2 IP) combined to allow just one hit over 3 2/3 innings before the Giants rallied in the ninth against Kurt Yacko. Andrew Susac started the frame by drawing a walk before Devin Harris lined a single to left. After pinch-hitter Luke Anders popped out, Carter Jurica blooped a single down the right field line to load the bases. Modesto closer Adam Jorgenson was then summoned from the bullpen and he fanned Lofton for the second out of the inning. Lollis then stepped to the plate and grounded a 1-2 pitch from Jorgenson through the hole on the right side for a single as Susac and Harris both scored. The two-RBI hit cut the Nuts lead in half at 5-3. Panik was up next with the potential tying run at first base, but he grounded out weakly to second on the first pitch of the at-bat to end the game.

Rose (2-2) was credited with the win for Modesto while Jorgenson improved to a perfect 7-for-7 in save opportunities this season.

Bradley (3-3) suffered the loss after yielding five runs (four earned) on a career-high 10 hits in five-plus innings. The left-hander walked three and did not record a strikeout.
