Sacramento River Cats News Release
West Sacramento, Calif. - Despite a big afternoon from Michael Taylor and a ninth-inning rally, the Sacramento River Cats fell to the Iowa Cubs, 4-3, in a Mother's Day matinee at Raley Field
Trailing 4-0 heading into the bottom of the ninth, Brandon Moss led off with a ground-rule double to right. After a walk, two singles and a sacrifice fly, Jeff Fiorentino came to the plate representing the winning run with the Cats trailing 4-3 and Luke Hughes on first base. Iowa closer Blake Parker induced a fly ball to center, ending Sacramento's rally and evening the series at a game apiece.
Despite tossing a quality start, A.J. Griffin (0-1) suffered the loss in his first Triple-A appearance of 2012. Griffin surrendered three earned runs on just four hits in six innings, striking out five and walking three.
The win went to Chris Rusin, who improved to 4-2 after tossing eight shutout innings, fanning seven Sacramento hitters. Parker got the final two outs of the ninth to pick up his fifth save.
Taylor finished two-for-two with two walks, while Grant Green finished with a two-hit afternoon as well. Moss doubled and scored a run in the ninth for the Cats, who fell to 25-13 on the season.
The River Cats face the Cubs again Monday evening, with Sacramento RHP Travis Banwart (3-1, 5.63 ERA) scheduled to toe the slab against Iowa RHP Rodrigo Lopez (0-0, 2.00). Monday's game is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Raley Field, and is a "Kids Eat Free Monday" presented by California Family Fitness.
