New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
Bryan Petersen had four hits, and Brad Hand allowed just two hits over six innings as the New Orleans Zephyrs claimed a 7-3 victory over the Las Vegas 51s on Mother's Day at Zephyr Field.
After Las Vegas sliced a Zephyrs' three-run lead down to one in the top of the eighth, Luke Montz led off the bottom of the inning with a solo home run to give the Z's a 5-3 lead. Petersen followed with a double and Donovan Solano reached on a sacrifice bunt before stealing second. With one out, Mike Cervenak hit an RBI single to left field, scoring Petersen. Scott Cousins laced a single into center, plating Solano, for a 7-3 lead.
The Zephyrs struck first when Petersen led off the bottom of the first with a triple into the right field corner and Solano drew a walk. Chris Coghlan scored Petersen on a single to left-center. With bases loaded, Las Vegas starter Aaron Laffey walked Matt Dominguez, bringing in Solano to give the Z 's an early 2-0 lead.
Las Vegas got on the board in the fourth inning when Adeiny Hechavarria led off with a double, and was quickly moved to third with a groundout. Travis Snider scored Hechavarria with a sacrifice fly to center field, bringing the 51s within one run.
The Z's answered right back with another run in the bottom of the frame. Gil Velazquez singled to right, and scored on a single to center field by Petersen.
The 51's drew within one run again in the top of the eighth, starting with a home run to right-center by Yan Gomes. Mike McCoy singled up the middle, as did Hechavarria to put the go-ahead run on base. Gose singled to center field, plating McCoy, before Sandy Rosario struck out Snider to end the threat.
Petersen led the Zephyrs' offense going 4-for-5 with a double, triple, and two runs scored. Cousins went 3-for-5 with two RBI, and Coghlan had two hits on the day, including a double and RBI.
Hand (3-2) earned the win, allowing one run and two hits over six innings of work. He fanned eight and walked three. Sandy Rosario earned his PCL-leading 10th save, throwing 1 1/3 innings with one hit and a strikeout.
Laffey (1-5) took the loss for Las Vegas. He allowed seven hits and three runs in 3 2/3 innings. Laffey walked five and struck out four.
