Fresno Rallies to Beat Sox in Series Opener

May 4, 2012 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

The Fresno Grizzlies (22-7) spoiled the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (14-15) first sellout crowd of the season on Ft. Carson Appreciation Night, erasing a five-run Sky Sox lead that culminated with a two-run homer for left-fielder Roger Kieschnick with two outs in the ninth inning to win the series opener 7-6.

Kieschnick's home run off Sky Sox right-hander Zach Putnam was his team-leading seventh of the season and capped six unanswered runs in the final four innings for the Grizzlies, securing their PCL-leading 22nd win of the season. The Sox built up a 6-1 lead on a RBI double and single by third baseman Jordan Pacheco, a RBI triple by second baseman DJ LeMahieu and a RBI single by right-fielder Matt McBride, his team-leading 22nd RBI of the season. The Sky Sox could not manage a run after the fifth inning.

After allowing two hits and a run to start the game, Sox starter Christian Friedrich did not let a ball leave the infield until the top of the sixth inning. The Grizzlies led off that inning with three straight hits, and totaled five hits in the sixth to cut the deficit to 6-5, where the score stood until Kieschnick's shot to right field. The loss is the Sky Sox fourth in five meetings with the Grizzlies this season, and the first Colorado Springs loss when they have led after five innings of play.

The Sky Sox record stands at under .500 for the first time since April 13, but Colorado Springs remains in second place in the Pacific Northern Division. In the loss Pacheco extended his hitting streak to 10 games with his 3-for-5 performance, the longest streak a Sky Sox player has strung together this season. Pacheco leads all of Triple-A with 29 hits in 17 games since he joined the Sky Sox on April 16, collecting a hit in 15 of the 17 games.

The Sox will attempt to get back to .500 on the season as they send out right-hander Rob Scahill (3-2, 6.12), who is looking for his first home win this season, against Fresno left-hander Matt Yourkin (1-1, 3.95) at 1:05 p.m. MT.
