Round Rock Express Top Memphis in Series Opener 8-1

May 4, 2012 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Round Rock Express News Release

ROUND ROCK, Texas - Dusty Brown was a triple shy of the cycle, spearheading a 13-hit attack as the Round Rock Express defeated the Memphis Redbirds 8-1 in Friday night's Pacific Coast League series opener at The Dell Diamond. The Express (14-15) have won four straight, their longest winning streak of the season, and posted just their second series-opening win this season in eight tries. The Redbirds (12-15) fell to 4-9 on the road.

Brown walked in his first at bat, singled in the fourth, doubled off the wall in the sixth and blasted a two-run homer in the seventh, capping a four-run frame that put the game away. Eight of nine Express starters hit safely with four turning in multiple-hit efforts. Joey Butler was 0-for-2 but walked twice and scored a run. It was the 12th consecutive game with at least nine hits for Round Rock, nine of which have been double-digit hit games.

Meanwhile, Express starter Greg Reynolds (2-3) rebounded nicely from his shakiest start of the season when he allowed eight runs on 10 hits over five and one-third innings Sunday at Oklahoma City. Friday night, Reynolds limited Memphis to one run on five hits and a walk over six innings despite not recording a strikeout. Tyler Tufts, Yoshinori Tateyama and Mark Hamburger each worked a scoreless inning of relief to close the game for the Express.

Brad Nelson and Elio Sarmiento both had RBI doubles in the bottom of the first, and the Express never relinquished the lead. Memphis got on the board in the third on Matt Adams' sacrifice fly, but that was the extent of the Redbirds scoring on the night. Greg Miclat scored Tommy Mendonca with an RBI single in the fourth, and Brown scored on Julio Borbon's two-out single in the sixth. Sarmiento added a two-run double in the seventh ahead of Brown's home run.

Memphis starter Joe Kelly (1-2) took the loss, allowing three runs on seven hits and four walks over five innings with two strikeouts. A one-out Redbirds error in the seventh led to three unearned runs, all charged to R.J. Swindle.

Yangervis Solarte was 2-for-5, extending his hitting streak to 15 games. That matches Butler's streak from mid-April as the season's longest by an Express player and second-longest in the PCL. Nelson pushed his hitting streak to 11 games, while Borbon was 2-for-5 to run his hitting streak to six games.

Zack Cox was 3-for-4 for the Redbirds, while Pete Kozma was 2-for-4.

Round Rock and Memphis continue their four-game series Saturday with a 7:05 p.m. CDT first pitch at The Dell Diamond. Left-hander Zach Jackson (1-2, 5.02 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Express, opposite Redbirds right-hander and Houston native Shelby Miller (3-2, 5.09 ERA).
