Cubs Win Wild Walk-Off in Pitchers Duel

May 4, 2012 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Iowa Cubs News Release

Des Moines --The Iowa Cubs won in walk-off fashion on a wild pitch against New Orleans in the first game of a four-game home stand at Principal Park Friday night. The Cubs (11-16) came out on top of a pitchers duel, after Luis Valbuena and Anthony Rizzo opened the ninth with back-to-back base knocks. Rizzo later scored on a Rob Delaney wild pitch to win the game, after Ty Wright was intentionally walked to load the bases. Delaney suffered his first loss of the season.

Rodrigo Lopez and Frankie De La Cruz combined to hold New Orleans (15-13) to just two hits in their eight innings of work. Rodrigo Lopez, making an abbreviated start on a pitch count, tossed three innings of one-hit ball, fanning three and walking one. De La Cruz followed up with five scoreless frames of his own, striking out one and surrendering two free passes. Blake Parker, who threw a scoreless ninth, picked up the win. Wade LeBlanc received a no-decision after pitching seven innings, surrendering no runs on four hits and one walk, while striking out six.

C Juan Apodaca doubled in his first at-bat as an I-Cub at Principal Park, reaching base safely in two of his three plate appearances. 1B Anthony Rizzo (2-for-4) extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a frozen rope single in the fourth and a ninth inning double. Not to be outdone, 2B Luis Valbuena (3-for-4) was the only other I-Cub with a multi-hit game ripping two singles and a double.

The Cubs will look to make it two in a row tomorrow night with a 7:05 p.m. start for Cinco de Mayo at Principal Park. LHP Travis Wood (1-3) will take the hill for Iowa against RHP Tom Koehler (1-3) for game two of the series. Fans can tune in to Iowa Cubs action with Deene Ehlis and Randy Wehofer on AM 940 with the pregame show beginning at 6:45 p.m.
