McDade Homers But Fisher Cats Fall to R-Phils 8-6

(Manchester, NH)-Mike McDade homered and drove in three runs and Brian Van Kirk went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs but the Fisher Cats dropped an 8-6 decision to first-place Reading before 5,730 on Thursday morning at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.

The R-Phils rallied to win the game with three runs in the top of the ninth inning against losing pitcher Ron Uviedo (1-1). Michael Spidale (3-for-5, RBI) tied with the game with an RBI single and Tug Hulett delivered the game winning hit.

The Fisher Cats drew first blood, scoring twice in the bottom of the first inning. Ryan Goins led off with a single and Jonathan Diaz walked. McDade knocked in his first run with a single. Brad Glenn walked and Van Kirk drove in his first run with a single to make it 2-0.

New Hampshire (11-15) extended the lead in the third inning. Diaz reached on a hit-by-pitch and McDade followed with a long home run to right field to make it 4-0. After Mark Sobolewski reached on an error and stole second, he scored on a Van Kirk double to make it 5-0 against losing pitcher Jonathan Pettibone (1-4).

The first two runs for the Phillies (18-8) came across in the top of the fifth inning. Hulett and Leandro Castro singled and Steve Lerud (2-for-4, 2 RBI) doubled to make it 5-1. Tyson Gillies drove in the other run with a sacrifice fly.

Reading added two more runs in the top of the sixth inning. Darin Ruf and Michael Spidale singled. After a wild pitch, Miguel Abreu drove in both runners with a single to make it 5-4.

Van Kirk singled in the sixth and moved to second on a single by Brian Jeroloman. After a wild pitch and a walk to Justin Jackson loaded the bases, Goins hit a sacrifice fly to put New Hampshire up 6-4.

Reading closed to 6-5 in the top of the eighth inning. Abreu walked, moved to second on a wild pitch and Lerud singled him home.

Casey Lawrence had a solid start for the Fisher Cats. The 24-year old right hander worked the first 5.1 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out three.

Frank Gailey (1-0) earned the win in relief for Reading and Justin Friend worked a scoreless ninth with three strikeouts for his Eastern League-leading seventh save.

The Fisher Cats open a six-game road trip in Trenton on Friday night at 7:05pm. New Hampshire will start RHP Chad Jenkins (2-2, 5.53) against Thunder RHP Brett Marshall (3-1, 3.81). Radio coverage with Tom Gauthier begins at 6:45pm on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network and www.nhfishercats.com.
