Erie SeaWolves News Release

The SeaWolves used an a gem from starting pitcher James Avery on Thursday afternoon at Jerry Uht Park as the Erie righty tossed a complete game shutout in a 1-0 win over the Altoona Curve.

Both Avery and Curve starter Kris Johnson were firing on all cylinders. Johnson held the SeaWolves to three hits with no walks and four strikeouts in five innings in a no-decision.

Erie broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the eighth against Altoona reliever Vic Black. Niuman Romero led off and doubled down the left field line. A Brandon Douglas base knock to center put runners on the corners for Ben Guez. With the infield drawn in, Guez floated a base hit to shallow right, plating Romero for the game's lone run.

Altoona threatened in the top of the ninth against Avery but he would not be denied. A two-out walk put runners on first and second for Ramon Cabrera. Avery induced a fly ball to center, capping the shutout win.

Avery (4-1) has now won three straight and four of five to start the season tossing 113 pitches on Thursday. He retired the leadoff hitter in every inning and allowed just one walk while striking out a season-high eight.
