Justin Wilson Named IL Pitcher of the Week
April 30, 2012 - International League (IL1)
Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis Indians left handed starting pitcher Justin Wilson has been named the International League's Pitcher of the Week for the period of April 23-29. Wilson earned the award thanks in large part to his spectacular performance in the Tribe's combined no-hitter on Sunday, April 29 in Durham.
Along with relievers Jose Diaz and Doug Slaten, Wilson entered the history books on Sunday, April 29 as the trio of Tribe hurlers combined to no-hit the Durham Bulls in a 2-0 victory. It was the Indians first no-hitter since Ian Snell blanked the Norfolk Tides on May 15, 2005.
Wilson was masterful in the combined no-hitter, striking an Indians season high nine batters and at one point retiring 14 straight Durham hitters between the second and eighth frames. In the outing Wilson threw 107 pitches (72 strikes) to 23 batters over 7.1 innings, his longest outing since he went eight innings on August 14, 2010, while a member of the Double-A Altoona Curve.
Wilson's nine-strikeout effort in the no-hitter along with the five he collected in a loss to Louisville earlier in the week, helped the southpaw lead the International League in punchouts with 14. With the league's top K total of the week and his masterful no-hit performance, Wilson would become the first Indians player to take home an IL Player Of The Week Award since RHP Jeremy Powell earned the honor in the week of May 3-9, 2010.
Following his award winning week, Wilson sits at 2-3 on the season with a 3.00 ERA and ranks fourth in the league with 31 strikeouts on the season.
