Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - A third-inning grand slam by Peoria's Taylor Davis provided enough offense for the visiting Chiefs to defeat the Fort Wayne TinCaps 5-2 on Sunday afternoon. TinCaps starter Matt Wisler surrendered five unearned runs during his outing, which lasted two and two thirds innings.
The Fort Wayne (9-15) offense was stagnant out of the gate, with just four runners reaching base over the first five innings against Peoria's Ben Wells (2-1). One of those runners, Duanel Jones, reached on a base hit, while Jace Peterson walked twice and Corey Adamson walked once during that five-inning span.
Wisler (0-3) worked through the first two innings allowing two base hits, and the third inning began with a leadoff double by Peoria's Brad Zapenas. Pin-Chieh Chen followed with a ground ball to second base, which was ruled a fielding error on Casey McElroy, allowing Chen to reach first. Zeke DeVoss walked, and Wes Darvill grounded into a fielder's choice in which Zapenas was retired at home plate for the first out of the inning. Rafael Lopez followed with a sacrifice fly, making it 1-0, and two batters later Davis cleared the bases with his first home run of the year to make it 5-0 in favor of Peoria.
The TinCaps scored two runs in the eighth inning on a two-run single from Travis Whitmore. He finished the ballgame 2-4. Peterson finished the afternoon 0-1, but did draw three walks in the leadoff spot.
For the second straight game the Fort Wayne bullpen held Peoria in check. Colin Rea worked an inning and one third, followed by four scoreless frames from Justin Hancock. The righty from Cecil, Ohio, struck out four. Lefty Robert Eisenbach worked a scoreless ninth inning.
The rubber match of the three-game set is scheduled for Monday morning at 11:05 a.m., with Cody Hebner pitching for Fort Wayne and Gerardo Concepcion taking the hill for Peoria.
