Victory Field Classic Set for this Saturday

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Victory Field Classic, presented by the Indiana National Guard, features four Indiana high school baseball teams in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 28 at Victory Field. Avon and Center Grove are scheduled to face off in the first contest at 5:30 p.m. with a matchup between North Central and Hamilton Southeastern to follow.

Gates for the fifth annual Victory Field Classic will be open at 4:30 p.m., with the first game starting at 5:30 and the second no earlier than 7:30 p.m. Admission is $5 and parking will be made available in the Victory Field parking lot for $3.

Avon, who faces off against Fishers on April 26 before making their way to Victory Field, currently has a record of 7-6 on the season. Led by Head Coach Troy Drosche, the Orioles roster features offensive leaders in senior Caleb Coy (.424 BA, 5 2B, 13 RBI) as well as juniors Dylan Jones (.432 BA 13 R, 13 RBI) and Cole Johnson (.341 BA, 10 R, 13 RBI), while the pitching staff is paced by juniors Tasker Strobel (3-1, 1 SV, 3.50 ERA, 20.0 IP, 19 K) and Brad McCaslin (1-2, 2.63 ERA, 18.2 IP, 13 K).

Center Grove, who faces off against Terre Haute North Vigo on April 27 before making their way to Victory Field, currently sits at 9-3 and is coming off a big 3-1 win over Cathedral on April 25. Led by Head Coach Dave Gandolph, the Trojans roster features offensive leaders in seniors Brock Koehler (.444 BA, 14 R, 17 RBI) and Brad Walker (.486 BA 10 R, 14 RBI) as well as top pitchers senior Mark Garrett (3-0, 1.58 ERA, 13.1 IP, 26 K) and junior Josh Piper ( 1-0, 3 SV, 0.55 ERA, .405 BA, 7 R, 11 RBI,).

North Central is coming off a 12-13-1 overall record and 6-8 conference record in 2011. The Panthers, who are led by head coach Phillip McIntyre had a record of 3-6 overall and 2-4 in conference through their first nine games this season.

Hamilton Southeastern is coming off a 14-16 overall record and 7-11 conference record in 2011. The Royals, who are led by Head Coach Scott Johnson (282-181), currently sit at 9-5 overall and will have a contest against Zionsville before making their way to Victory Field.

All four of these teams will hope to make a return to trip to Victory Field, which will once again host the IHSAA State Finals on June 15 & 16.
