Chiefs Lose to Lansing 7-3 Monday

Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs fell to the Lansing Lugnuts 7-3 Monday night at Peoria Chiefs Stadium as the Chiefs posted just five hits. The Chiefs fall to 7-11 on the campaign as they look to take the rubber match Tuesday at 11:00 a.m.

The Lugnuts jumped out to a lead in the top of the fourth. KC Hobson led off with a double to the left field corner before Carlos Perez walked and Chris Hawkins singled to load the bases. Starter Jose Rosario got Kevin Patterson to bounce into a double-play, allowing Hobson to score the first run of the ballgame. Kellen Sweeney laced a two-out single past the diving Zeke DeVoss at second, bringing home Perez to make it 2-0.

Lansing was back in business in the top of the sixth. Perez and Hawkins singled to start the inning before Patterson made it three straight singles bringing home Perez to make it 3-0. Luis Liria came out of the bullpen replacing Rosario but the Lugnuts weren't done scoring. Sweeney put both runners in scoring position with a groundout to second and Andy Burns went down swinging before Jonathon Berti hit a two-out single plating Patterson. The Lugnuts added one more as with runners on the corners, Berti stole second and a throwing error by catcher Taylor Davis allowed Patterson to score extending the lead to 5-0.

The Chiefs cut into the Lugnuts' lead in the bottom half of the sixth. Zeke DeVoss led off with a bunt single and stole second with one out. He wound up on third on the same play with a throwing error by the catcher Perez. Ryan Cuneo tallied his team leading 12th RBI of the season with a groundout cutting the lead to 5-1.

Lansing added some insurance in the top of the ninth. Kevin Pillar welcomed new pitcher Austin Reed with a single to start the inning. After a Hobson flyout, Pillar stole second and was brought home by a Perez RBI triple. A wild pitch by Reed brought home Perez giving the Lugnuts a 7-1 lead.

The Chiefs gave a comeback effort in the bottom of the ninth starting with a Paul Hoilman single. After a Davis strikeout, Taiwan Easterling ripped an RBI triple to left center bringing home Hoilman and cutting the lead to 7-2. Wes Darvill made it 7-3 with an RBI groundout scoring Easterling but AJ Meyer retired Eduardo Gonzalez with a runner on first to end the game.

Rosario (1-3) went five innings allowing five runs, four earned on nine hits, walking two and striking out two. Luis Liria replaced Rosario to start the sixth going two shutout innings, allowing two hits, walking one and striking out two. Bryce Shafer came in to start the eighth pitching one inning, walking one and striking out one. Reed came in to pitch the ninth, going one inning, surrendering two runs on two hits.

Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Wes Darvill (3B) - Darvill finished Monday's ballgame 1-for-2 with two walks and a RBI. The third baseman's average is now at .262 heading into Tuesday's rubber match.

Notes: Monday marked the first time this season Davis has started consecutive games...The nine hits surrendered by Rosario was a career-high...Zapata had his team-high eight game hit streak come to an end Monday night...Hoiman's single in the ninth extended his hit streak to eight games and was the first of the night for the Chiefs to leave the infield...Easterling's RBI triple in the ninth gave him RBI in back-to-back games...The triple also marked Easterling's first extra-base hit of the season...The Chiefs were 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position...The rubber match of the three game series will Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. as its a Taco Bell Tuesday at Peoria Chiefs Stadium...Tuesday is also the annual D.A.R.E.
