Bowie Baysox News Release

Bowie, Md. - The Baysox managed just three runs on a cold Monday evening, but were still able to pull out a 2-0 win over the Akron Aeros thanks to strong pitching. With the win, the team improves to 7-11 on the season.

Left-handed starting pitcher Jake Pettit continued his hot start to the season with five scoreless innings Monday evening. He allowed three hits while striking out three batters and walking three more.

The Baysox entire pitching staff was strong Monday night, as they allowed a season-low four hits in the team's first shutout win of the season. Right-handed reliever Stu Pomeranz followed Pettit and threw three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out two batters. Right-handed reliever Greg Burke pitched the ninth inning for the Baysox and struck out two batters as he earned his first save of the season.

"Pettit did a really nice job changing speeds and he made pitches when he had to," said Manager Gary Kendall. "He had a couple runners on second base and he wound up pitching out of that. Pomeranz did a nice job with that after giving up a double with no outs. They did a nice job making pitches."

After a slow start to the game that saw the Baysox hitless through three innings against Akron starter Eric Berger, the team finally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning. First baseman Brandon Waring hit a lead off double to left field and with two outs, catcher Caleb Joseph singled to center field to plate Waring. Right fielder Ronnie Welty recorded another two out RBI with a triple to right field that scored Joseph and made the score 2-0.

Welty started with a bang in his first game with the Baysox this season. He played the entire 2011 season in Bowie, but started this season with Advanced-A Frederick, where he was already named Carolina League Player of the Week.

"I was a little nervous coming back and I just really wanted to do well," Welty said. "I was really excited to get my first hit out of the way and to help the team win."

Pomeranz has gotten off to an extremely fast start for the Baysox, recording 20 strikeouts in 13.1 innings over five appearances. He has been the Baysox most reliable bullpen pitcher so far this season.

"I try to strike everyone out," Pomeranz said. "If I get one strike on someone, I go right after them as long as it's within reason."

The second game in a three game home series against Akron is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Tuesday. LHP Cole McCurry (0-2, 4.91) will be taking the mound against the Aeros LHP TJ McFarland (2-1, 2.30).

The Baysox are home for a seven-game home stand that lasts through Wednesday, April 25. Fans can come to the game early on Sunday, April 22 and play catch on the field before the 2:05 p.m. game. Fans can come early on Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. for Tailgate Tuesday and Wednesday is a day game starting at 11:05 a.m.
