Bandits Can"t Hold Ninth-Inning Lead, Lose on Walk-Off

April 22, 2012 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

Bowling Green first baseman Jeff Malm hit a walk-off single to right field, capping a two-run ninth inning against River Bandits left-hander Danny Miranda that gave the Hot Rods a 4-3 win in Bowling Green, Ky., Sunday night.

The two ninth-inning runs were the first of the season allowed by Miranda (2-1), who entered with runners at first and second and two outs in the eighth. He faced left-handed pinch-hitter Drew Vettleson, who grounded a ball to shortstop Matt Williams, but he misplayed it to load the bases. Miranda bounced back, however, by getting catcher Alejandro Torres to hit a grounder to third baseman Garrett Wittels, who stepped on third to end the inning with Quad Cities leading 3-2.

In the ninth inning, Miranda walked shortstop Jake Hager and struck out third baseman Tyler Goeddel. Second baseman Ryan Brett followed with a single to Williams at short. Left fielder Taylor Motter then hit a ball that got past Williams into center field to tie the game. Williams was charged with his second error of the game, but the River Bandits got Motter trying to advance to second base for the second out of the inning. With a runner at third in a 3-3 tie, Miranda intentionally walked right fielder Todd Glaesmann, who had homered in the first inning for the game's first run. Next was Malm, who entered the game in the top of the ninth to play first base. His hit sent the River Bandits to a season-high third straight loss, which kept them in a first-place tie for the Midwest League Western Division with Wisconsin, which lost 2-1 in 10 innings Sunday at South Bend, Ind.

The River Bandits wasted another solid start from left-hander Dail Villanueva, who scattered seven hits and struck out six batters with no walks in six innings for the second straight start. He allowed single runs in the first and fourth innings, while his counterpart, left-hander Felipe Rivero, took a 2-0 lead into the fifth but couldn't get out of the inning.

Quad Cities (10-7) took a 3-2 lead with a three-run fifth inning without hitting the ball out of the infield. Right fielder Roberto Reyes reached on an error by first baseman Cameron Seitzer, and Wittels drew a walk. With no one out, Williams put down a sacrifice bunt, but Seitzer made his second error of the inning when he threw to first, allowing Reyes to score and Wittels and Williams to reach scoring position. Center fielder Nick Martini then hit a game-tying infield single - the only hit of the inning - to shortstop Jake Hager. Designated hitter Colin Walsh drew a walk, and River Bandits first baseman David Medina came to the plate with nobody out and a 2-2 tie. Medina grounded to second base, and the Hot Rods turned a double play as Williams scored the go-ahead run. Rivero was then lifted for right-hander Jason McEachern, who retired catcher Juan Castillo on a groundout to end the inning. None of the three runs were earned against Rivero, who allowed four hits with four walks and four strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings.

Bowling Green (12-5) took a 1-0 lead on Glaesmann's first-inning, two-out solo home run to left field. Motter kept it 1-0 by throwing out Wittels at home plate from left field on Walsh's single to end the third inning. The Hot Rods extended the lead to 2-0 in the fourth when Seitzer - who finished the day 4-for-4 - hit a leadoff single, advanced to second on a passed ball by Castillo, went to third on a sacrifice and scored on a single by center fielder Joel Caminero.

The River Bandits and Hot Rods meet again at 6:35 p.m. Monday at Bowling Green Ballpark. Left-hander Dail Villanueva (1-1) will make his third start and face Hot Rods left-hander Felipe Rivero (2-1).
