Bees Beat Loons in Shutout

Burlington Bees News Release
BURLINGTON, Iowa (4/22/12) - The Burlington Bees (8-9) didn't pitch a perfect game, but they looked picture perfect in a shutout win over the Great Lakes Loons (9-8). The Bees won 7-0 at Community Field in the first game of a three game series.
The Bees sent Drew Granier to the mound to start game one and Granier looked as sharp as he did in his previous outing. Last week Granier pitched the only complete game of the Midwest League season when he tossed seven innings in game one of a doubleheader at Wisconsin.
Granier pitched six innings of scoreless baseball for the Bees on Sunday afternoon. The right-hander gave up six hits and one walk, but also struck out six batters en route to his third win of the season. Granier's quickly become the most consistent starter on the Bees' pitching staff. He has yet to allow more than two runs in a start and hasn't given up an earned run in the last 13 innings he's pitched.
Brent Powers looked like the most consistent pitcher on the Bees roster until his first and only bad outing against the Timber Rattlers last week. But Powers pitched three innings, allowed only one hit, and struck out two batters. The lefty picked up his first save of the season.
The Loons started Brandon Martinez who quickly gave up two runs in the first and a few more in the third. The skinny right-hander couldn't miss the Bees bats and also made a couple of mental mistakes defensively. Martinez pitched three innings and surrendered six hits, five earned runs, and took the loss.
John Nester, Douglas Landaeta, Chih-Fang Pan, and Nick Rickles gave manager Aaron Nieckula a lot of production from second half of the lineup. Each had a multi-hit game except for Landaeta, but Landaeta also scored two runs and earned an RBI.
The Bees finally played better defensively and finished the game with their first errorless outing in eleven games. Overall, the Bees looked perfect in every facet of the game. They plan on continuing that strong effort on Monday night against the Loons at 6:30 p.m. For tickets, call (319) 754-5705 or visit www.gobees.com for more information.
