Burlington Bees News Release
BURLINGTON, Iowa (4/21/12) - The Burlington Bees' (7-9) pitching failed them for the first time in three nights at Community Field. The Bees lost 9-6 to the Lansing Lugnuts (13-3) after taking a commanding lead in the first half of the game.
Right-hander Jonathan Joseph started the rubber match for the Bees and looked good through the first four innings. Joseph gave up a run in the first, but faced one more than the minimum over the next three innings.
The Bees scored a run in the bottom of the second after Dusty Robinson hit a leadoff triple and scored on an infield single by Bobby Crocker. Robinson now has nine extra-base hits, which ties him for second for the league leaders.
Suddenly game three transformed into a distinctly different experience when compared to the first two games of the series. Over the next two innings, the Bees would score five runs with most of that coming from B.A. Vollmuth. Vollmuth was hitting .214 coming into Saturday night's game and fixed his season with two big swings. Vollmuth hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the third and another in the fourth. Royce Consigli scored on both dingers.
But Joseph started to struggle in the top of the fifth and after giving up two runs and loading the bases, Seth Frankoff entered the game and struck out Chris Hawkins with a back-door breaking ball. But Frankoff couldn't carry his good stuff into the next inning and ultimately surrendered the lead in the top of the sixth. Chaz Mye eventually pitch parts of the sixth and seventh and gave up two more earned runs.
Overall, Joseph went 4.2 innings and gave up three earned runs on six hits. Frankoff pitched 0.2 innings and gave up four runs (two earned) on one hit and two walks. Mye pitched 2.2 innings and gave up two runs on five hits.
The Bees never scored after the fourth inning and could not come back to reclaim the lead. Ultimately the pitching staff blew a 6-1 lead and gave away the chance for an impressive series win. But the Bees start a new series on Sunday with the Great Lakes Loons. For tickets, call (319) 754-5705 or visit www.gobees.com for more information.
