Rainiers' Series Opener Foiled By Fresno
April 22, 2012 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1) - Tacoma Rainiers News Release
TACOMA, Wash. -- The Tacoma Rainiers fell victim to a stifling start from Fresno's Brian Burress and dropped their series opener with the Grizzlies 12-0 at Cheney Stadium on Saturday.
Burres (1-1) stymied the Rainiers through 7.0 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit, Luis Jimenez's single in the fourth. The left-hander issued one walk and fanned five on the way to sending Tacoma to the club's second shutout loss in their last 12 games.
At the plate, Fresno jumped out to a 3-0 lead that stuck in the first inning. Shortstop Joaquin Arias singled in the first run for the Grizzlies, and Charlie Culberson drove in another with an RBI-double two batters later. Todd Linden rounded out the frame with another RBI-single.
Linden, a native of Edmonds, WA, recorded four hits and produced three RBI for the Grizzlies, including a two-run home run in the top of the eighth inning. First baseman Cole Gillaspie turned in a five-hit effort and the shortstop Arias went 3-for-4 with an RBI.
Rainiers starter Jeff Marquez (1-1) struggled through 4.0 innings of work on Saturday. The right-hander surrendered five runs on nine hits and fanned three in the contest.
The Rainiers (7-10) return to action on Sunday, April 22, for the second game of the club's four-game series with the Grizzlies. Left-hander Mauricio Robles (0-1, 3.95) is slated to get the start for Tacoma against right-hander Eric Hacker (3-0, 2.00) for Fresno. First pitch is scheduled for 1:35 p.m.
