Wranglers Edge Steelheads in Overtime

April 18, 2012 - ECHL (ECHL) - Idaho Steelheads News Release

(Las Vegas, NV) - Scott Campbell redirected a Chris Francis pass past Jerry Kuhn just 91 seconds into overtime Tuesday night as the Las Vegas Wranglers defeated the Idaho Steelheads, 3-2, in Game 2 of the best-of-seven ECHL Western Conference semifinals.

The Wranglers lead the series, two games to none, with Game 3 coming back to Boise's CenturyLink Arena on Thursday.

Neither team found the net in the first period, thanks in large part Kuhn. In a one-minute span midway through the frame, Idaho's rookie goaltender stoned Ash Goldie on a breakaway and then robbed Eric Lampe on the doorstep.

Las Vegas scored first at 4:09 of the second on Josh Lunden's first of the playoffs from the high slot. Idaho answered at 11:53 on a goal-mouth scramble as Cody Purves jammed home a loose puck past Mitch O'Keefe to even things up at 1-1. Pruves' third of the postseason was assisted by Chad Nehring. The Wranglers would take the lead back at 14:18 on Peter MacArthur's first of the postseason, a pretty offensive-zone attack between Goldie, Lunden, and MacArthur as the second period ended with Las Vegas on top, 2-1.

Idaho controlled play for much of the third period, finally drawing even on another goal-mouth scramble as Joe Pereira pounced on a loose puck at the left-hand post, slamming it past O'Keefe at 18:08 of the third to even the game up and send it to overtime. Pereira's second of the postseason was assisted by Jacob Cepis and Aaron Lewicki.

In the overtime, Idaho came out of the gates flying. Cody Purves ripped a shot over the crossbar and Derek LeBlanc generated another scoring opportunity for the Steelheads. But neither found the net and Las Vegas finally carried the puck into Idaho's zone. And, on that first attempt in the Idaho end, the Wranglers won the game as Francis' pass from the right-hand half wall was finished by Campbell at 1:31 of overtime, Campbell's fourth of the playoffs.

Kuhn, once again, was great in net for Idaho, stopping 42 of 45 shots. O'Keefe gets the win, stopping 28 of 30. Neither team scored on the power play, Idaho going 0-3 and Las Vegas going 0-5.

Idaho will host home games in the Western Conference semifinals on Thursday, April 19th, Saturday, April 21st, and Sunday, April 22nd, at CenturyLink Arena in Boise. Tickets for Game 3 and 4 are on sale now at the CenturyLink Arena box office or online at www.idahosteelheads.com.
