Dayton Dragons News Release
South Bend, Ind.-Dayton pitchers Stalin Gerson and Dan Jensen combined on a three-hit shutout while Juan Silva and Ryan Wright each collected three hits as the Dragons defeated the South Bend Silver Hawks 6-0 on Saturday night. The win was the Dragons' second straight and improved their record to 4-5.
Gerson (1-1) went the first six innings, allowing two hits and no runs with two walks and five strikeouts. It was an excellent comeback performance for Gerson, who allowed three home runs and 10 hits in his first start of the season Monday in a loss to Lansing.
The Dragons pounded out a season-high 13 hits. In addition to the three hits by Silva and Wright, Kyle Waldrop and Yovan Gonzalez each had two hits.
The Dragons took the lead in the top of the second inning. Silva lined a single to center, stole second, and eventually scored on a double off the right field fence by Waldrop to make it 1-0. In the third, Wright singled, stole second, and scored on Silva's triple over the head of the center fielder to make it 2-0.
In the fourth, the Dragons added three more runs, keyed by a two-run home run by Juan Perez, his first of the season, to make it 5-0. Dayton scored again in the sixth inning on back-to-back doubles by Gonzalez and Theo Bowe to lead 6-0 and close out the scoring.
Jensen replaced Gerson after the sixth inning and finished the game to earn his first save. He worked three innings, allowing one hit and no walks with two strikeouts.
The Dragons (4-5) play at South Bend on Sunday against the Silver Hawks (4-5) at 2:05 p.m. in the last game of the series (WONE 980 AM). Carlos Gonzalez (0-1, 6.35) will start for Dayton against South Bend's J.R. Bradley (0-1, 21.60). The Dragons open a three-game series at Fort Wayne on Monday. They return to Dayton on April 19 vs. the Quad Cities River Bandits to begin a six-game homestand.
