Kernels Pitch First Shutout Against Bandits in 2012

April 14, 2012 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

Cedar Rapids right-hander Jairo Diaz held the River Bandits to four hits in seven shutout innings, and the Kernels got a home run from third baseman Kaleb Cowart and two hits apiece from left fielder Trevor Hairgrove and designated hitter Matthew Scioscia in a 5-0 win over the Quad Cities in Cedar Rapids Saturday night.

River Bandits left-hander Kyle Hald (0-1) pitched five innings in his second start and allowed two Kernels runs in the second inning. Cedar Rapids catcher Abel Baker hit a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to left field, and Scioscia followed with an RBI single to right. Hald then kept the Kernels scoreless through his final three innings.

Right-hander Kevin Jacob, who joined the team prior to Friday's game, made his River Bandits debut by starting the sixth inning and worked 1 2/3 innings while striking out three batters. But he also allowed three runs, including a two-out solo home run to Cowart in the sixth. In the seventh, Hairgrove hit an RBI double and Baker hit an RBI single against Jacob. After striking out the next two batters, Jacob was lifted for right-hander Willy Paulino, who held Cedar Rapids scoreless in 1 1/3 innings.

Meanwhile, the River Bandits offense that scored six runs each of the last two nights couldn't break through against Diaz (1-0). They put runners at first and third in the second, but first baseman David Medina grounded into an inning-ending double play, the first of three turned by Cedar Rapids behind Diaz, who induced 11 ground-ball outs to just one outfield flyout. He walked one batter and struck out one. Right-handers Frank DeJiulio and Joe Melioris each worked a scoreless inning in relief for Cedar Rapids (6-3).

The only River Bandit to reach third base in the game was Colin Walsh, who did so following each of his two doubles. Walsh, who made his first start at second base after seven games as the River Bandits designated hitter, has hit four doubles, a triple and a home run in the first three games of the series.

The River Bandits (5-4) will send right-hander Sam Gaviglio (0-0, 3.86 ERA) against Kernels left-hander Michael Johnson (0-0, 3.60 ERA) in the series finale Sunday at 2:05 p.m. The two teams began Saturday in a first-place tie with Burlington in the Midwest League Western Division.
