Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release

MIDLAND, Mich. - Despite committing four errors and picking up just four base hits, the Great Lakes Loons outlasted the Fort Wayne TinCaps by a 4-3 final score on Saturday afternoon at Dow Diamond. Fort Wayne starter Matt Wisler (0-2) allowed four runs, just two of which were earned, in his five innings, and that was all the Loons would need en route to their second straight victory.

The TinCaps (3-6) put both the tying and go-ahead runs on base in the ninth inning, but could not complete the comeback. Fort Wayne scored one run in the seventh, and another in the eighth to pull to within one. With two outs in the ninth, both Matt Colantonio and Alberth Martinez walked, putting runners at first and second, but Jace Peterson grounded out to end the game.

The Great Lakes (4-5) offense sprung to life early, scoring one run in four of the first five innings. Scott Schebler doubled home Kevin Taylor in the first inning to make it 1-0 Loons. In the second, James Baldwin doubled to lead off. With Justin Boudreaux batting, Wisler twirled to attempt a pickoff play at second base, but his toss sailed into center field, allowing Baldwin to scramble to third. Wisler was charged with an error. Baldwin would later score to make it 2-0.

In the fourth, Schebler tripled leading off the inning, and was plated on a Noel Cuevas sacrifice fly. Leading 3-1 in the fifth, Great Lakes' Jesus Arredondo got aboard on a fielder's choice. He stole second base and advanced to third on a throwing error by TinCaps catcher Matt Colantonio. Arredondo would later come in to score on a passed ball charged to Colantonio, who was tabbed with three over the course of the game.

Colantonio contributed an RBI single in the 7th, and first baseman Travis Whitmore an RBI double in the 8th, but the TinCaps offense fell just short.

Fort Wayne's bullpen worked three scoreless innings in relief of Wisler. John Barbato worked the sixth and the seventh, retiring all six batters and throwing only eleven pitches. Matt Stites tossed a perfect eighth.

Gustavo Gomez (1-1) earned the win for Great Lakes, working five and two thirds innings, allowing one run on two hits, walking two and striking out three. Jason West earned his first save of the year working an inning and a third to close the game.

The series finale is Sunday, with the TinCaps scheduled to send righty Cody Hebner to the mound, against Great Lakes righthander Arismendy Ozoria. First pitch at Dow Diamond is scheduled for 2:05 PM.
