Peoria Chiefs News Release

Grand Chute, WI - The Peoria Chiefs allowed runs in the first inning for the fourth straight game and lost on a walk-off double 4-3 to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Saturday afternoon. Peoria tied the game in the top of the ninth but a controversial call and a two-out double in the bottom of the inning sent the Chiefs to their third straight loss and a 3-6 record.

Wisconsin came out swinging against Ben Wells in the top of the first. Chad Stang was hit by a pitch to start the inning and with one out Jason Rogers doubled to right for a 1-0 lead. Greg Hopkins was hit in the back and Ben McMahan made it 2-0 with a double to left. Rafael Neda grounded out as Hopkins scored for a 3-0 lead before Wells escaped the inning.

The Chiefs put two on in the second but hit into a double play and left a runner at third base. In the top of the third Pin-Chieh Chen drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a balk by David Goforth. Zeke DeVoss lifted a two-run homer just over the 16-foot wall in left-center to put the Chiefs on the board and cut the Rattlers lead to 3-2. The homer was the first of the season for DeVoss and also his first career professional home run.

Wells settled in and Wisconsin was kept off the board by three pitchers through the eighth inning. The Chiefs left two on in the fourth and sixth before finally getting a run home in the ninth. Down to their last out, Brad Zapenas worked a full-count walk from Seth Harvey and Chen singled to left. DeVoss tied the game with a single to center as Chen advanced to third with the go-ahead run. Peoria appeared to have taken a 4-3 lead as Darvill beat out an infield single to short but was amazingly called out by the base umpire even though Rogers didn't have his foot on the bag at first. Chiefs hitting coach Barbaro Garbey was tossed from the dugout as the game moved to the bottom of the ninth.

Kyle Burke retired the first two batters in the last of the ninth before Yadiel Rivera singled to left. John Dishon sent the crowd of 3,451 home happy with a double to the wall in left-center as Rivera scored the winning run without a throw.

Wells allowed three runs on three hits over 5 2/3 innings while walking one and striking out five. He allowed just two base runners after the first inning. Scott Weismann retired the only batter he faced to end the sixth inning. Burke (0-1) allowed one run on four hits over 2 2/3 innings while striking out two.

Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Zeke DeVoss (2B) - DeVoss drove in all three Chiefs runs on Saturday while going 2-for-5 with a home run and a single. He scored a run and set a new career-high in RBI with his first professional home run in 179 at-bats.
