Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees News Release

Buffalo, NY - Dewayne Wise went 4-5 with two doubles and an RBI, Brandon Laird added two RBI's, and right hander Chase Whitley (WP, 1-0) tossed 4.0 scoreless innings in his Triple-A debut as the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees (3-5) downed the Buffalo Bisons (4-5) 7-5, to take two of three games in the series at Coca-Cola Field in Buffalo.

Wise continued his tear since joining the Yankees off the temporarily inactive list in Syracuse earlier in the week with his second multi-hit game of the season. He also contributed on defense, robbing Valentino Pascucci of a two run homer with a spectacular catch in left center field, climbing the fence and keeping the long drive in the ballpark.

Manager Dave Miley did not waste anytime inserting Whitley into the Yankees lineup after he was promoted from Double-A Trenton to fill the roster spot of Manny Banuelos, who was placed on the disabled list with a sore back following his start on Thursday. Whitley gave Scranton/Wilkes-Barre 4.0 shutout innings allowing one hit with three strikeouts in relief of starter D.J. Mitchell who faced two Buffalo batters in the bottom of the fifth inning before reaching his pitch limit.

The Bisons jumped out to an early 2-0 lead for the third straight day scoring two off Mitchell in the first inning on Vinny Rottino's two RBI double that scored Jordany Valdespin and Bobby Scales giving Buffalo the early lead. The Bisons added a run in the second inning off Mitchell on Lucas May's first homer of the season, the solo shot pushed the Buffalo advantage to 3-0.

The Yankees got back into the game off Bisons starter Jeremy Hefner (LP, 1-1) with one run in the fourth and four more in the fifth inning. Wise picked up his first hit of the afternoon singling to right and moved to third on right fielder Adam Loewen's two-base error. Wise scored on Brandon Laird's RBI ground out and SWB trailed 3-1.

Kevin Russo and Ramiro Pena hit back-to-back one out doubles in the fifth inning to pull within one run of the Bisons at 3-2. Following an error and a walk that loaded the bases, Wise came through with his second hit of the day, a two RBI single that game the Yankees a 4-3 lead. Colin Curtis' RBI ground out scored Jack Cust with the fourth run of the inning giving SWB a 5-3 lead.

Mitchell, who shutout Syracuse on one hit for five innings on Easter Sunday, faced two batters in the fifth inning allowing a hit and a walk before departing in favor of Whitley. A sacrifice bunt by Bobby Scales and a sacrifice fly from Josh Satin scored Omar Quintanilla, who led off the inning with a walk to pull the Bisons to within one at 5-4.

The Yankees pushed the lead back to two at 6-4 with a single run in the seventh inning. Cust worked a lead off walk off Dylan Owen, the third Bisons pitcher of the afternoon. Wise's third hit and second double of the day moved Cust to third. He would score on Laird's sacrifice fly, his second RBI of the afternoon. The teams traded runs in the ninth inning, with the Yankees scoring on Craig Tatum's bases load RBI single off Fernando Cabrera to push the lead to 7-4. The Bisons picked up a run off SWB closer Kevin Whelan (SV, 1) on a ground out from Loewen after Buffalo opened the inning with a single from Rottino and a double from Zach Lutz.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre plays its "home" opener on Saturday afternoon at Alliance Bank Stadium against the Syracuse opening up a quick two game series with a 4:00 PM first pitch. Right hander Adam Warren (0-1, 18.00 ERA) makes his second start of the season for the Yankees, while the Chiefs will send left hander Zach Duke (1-0, 0.00 ERA) to the mound for his second start in 2012.
