Owls Bounce Back Against Gastonia, 7-4

GASTONIA, N.C. - The Forest City Owls returned to their winning ways against the Gastonia Grizzlies, 7-4, Wednesday night at Sims Legion Park. Forest City leads the season series 2-1. The Owls improve to 5-4, while the Grizzlies drop to 3-6.

Ryan Quick took the hill for the Owls. The righty tossed five innings, giving up one run on three hits, totaling one strikeout and one base on balls. He earned his first victory of the season. Gastonia's Talton Cherry suffered the loss, hurling six innings and allowing four runs on five hits, striking out four batters and walking two.

The Owls struck first in the top of the second inning. With the bases loaded and one out, catcher Dan Burant grounded to short, plating DH Greg Harrison. An at-bat later, CF Michael Bishop poked a roller through the hole into left field, scoring SS Jake Watson and 3B Jordan Betts. Bishop was cut down at second trying to stretch a single into a double. Forest City led 3-0 after two.

Forest City posted another run in the third frame. RF Axel Johnson hit a hot grounder to the right side that ricocheted off 1B Brett Macari's mitt, bouncing into right field. LF Konstantine Diamaduros scored, lifting the Owls to a 4-0 advantage.

Gastonia returned fire in the fourth inning. 3B Tyler White crossed home plate on LF Grant Gajdosz's groundout to second base, cutting their deficit to 4-1. The Grizzlies put up another run in the bottom of the sixth. 1B Brett Macari hit a single to right field, scoring White and slicing the Owls lead in half to 4-2.

Diamaduros put the game away in the top of the seventh inning. He blasted a three-run home run off Grizzlies reliever Robby Van Cour. Diamaduros' first homer of the season put the Owls ahead 7-2 heading into the seventh inning stretch.

The Grizzlies did score a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh. Justin Vsquez hit a double to left that scored 2B Ryne Briley. CF Benji Jackson then crossed home plate after Watson bobbled White's chopper to short. Gastonia left the bases loaded after Owls reliever Ryan Tezak forced LF Grant Gajdosz to ground into an inning-ending double play. The Owls owned a 7-4 lead at the end of the seventh.

Owls closer Adam Izokovic entered the contest in the ninth, retiring three of four Grizzlies batters and earning his third save of the season.

Diamaduros and Johnson each had two hits for Forest City. Bishop finished 1-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs. White went 1-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI for the Grizzlies.

The Owls and Grizzlies will return to the diamond tomorrow night at McNair Field. First pitch is set for 7:30 PM.
