Morehead City Marlins News Release

Morehead City, N.C. - Five players from the 2010 Morehead City Marlins team have been selected during the second day of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Shawn Armstrong, Brent Powers, Zach Borenstein, Chad Oberacker, and Thomas Girdwood were all chosen on Tuesday.

Armstrong, who will also play for the Marlins in 2011, is a right-handed pitcher from East Carolina University. He was taken with the 548th overall pick by the Cleveland Indians. For the Marlins in their inaugural season last summer, Armstrong posted a 4-3 record, holding a 2.25 ERA in a staff-leading 64 innings pitched.

Brent Powers is one of three former Marlins selected by the Oakland Athletics. The A's drafted Powers as the 556th selection. A hard-throwing left-hander at Sam Houston State, Powers was one of the Marlins' most successful pitchers last summer. He went 7-2, earning a decision in every one of his appearances, held a 1.86 ERA, and struck out 70 opposing batters. For the BearKats this spring, Powers posted a 3.88 ERA, a 5-4 record, and 55 strikeouts in 62.2 innings pitched.

Borenstein, who was the 705th overall pick in the 23rd round to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, was a powerful hitter for the Marlins in 2010. He led the team in both home runs (4) and runs batted in (30). At Eastern Illinois this spring, Borenstein was an All-Ohio Valley Conference outfielder, belting seven home runs and compiling a .349 batting average.

Tennessee Tech outfielder Chad Oberacker was taken with the 766th overall pick by the Oakland Athletics. Oberacker hit .258 and stole eight bags as the Marlins' everyday centerfielder in 2010. This spring, he was named to three pre-season All-America teams, hit .293, and yielded a perfect fielding percentage.

Thomas Girdwood, a pitcher from Elon University, was selected with the 856th overall pick and also landed with the Oakland Athletics. Specialized as a closer, Girdwood recorded six saves while maintaining a 1.93 ERA with the Marlins last summer. At Elon, he has managed to attain the record for most career saves at 37, which is also the most for any pitcher that has ever played in the Southern Conference.

The MLB First-Year Player Draft continues on Wednesday, starting with the 31st round at noon.
