Last Night's Calder Cup Playoffs Action...

All eight playoff series were in action last night. Oklahoma City poured 20 of its 46 total shots on goal in the third period and finally broke through for a pair of goals en route to a much-needed 2-0 win over visiting Hamilton in Game 3 of their North Division semifinal on Tuesday. The Barons now trail the series by a 2-1 margin. The teams will get right back at it for Game 4 on Wednesday night at the Cox Convention Center...Veteran goaltender John Grahame stopped 39 of 40 shots in net to backstop Lake Erie to a 2-1 road win over Manitoba on Tuesday at the MTS Centre in Game 3 of the teams' North Division semifinal. The Monsters regained home-ice advantage and grabbed a 2-1 lead in the series, with Games 4 and 5 set for Thursday night and Friday night in Winnipeg.

In the Eastern Conference, Chad Kolarik and Mats Zuccarello each tallied a goal and an assist as Connecticut collected a 3-1 win over visiting Portland on Tuesday at the XL Center. The Atlantic Division semifinal is tied at two games apiece. The series will now shift back to Portland for Game 5 on Thursday and is guaranteed to return to Hartford for a sixth game on Saturday night... Hershey burst out to a 3-2 lead after 20 minutes and then had to hold on for a 3-2 road win over Charlotte at Time Warner Cable Arena on Tuesday. The victory allowed the Bears to grab a 2-1 edge in the best-of-seven series and regain home-ice advantage after dropping the opener at Giant Center. Game 4 is set for Wednesday night in Charlotte... Ryan Potulny kept the hot hand with a hat-trick effort for Binghamton, but Manchester received goals from six different players to double up the host Senators by a 6-3 count at the Broome County Arena on Tuesday. The Monarchs captured their second road win over Binghamton and took a commanding 3-1 series lead in this Atlantic Division semifinal. Game 5 is set for Wednesday night in Binghamton...Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and Norfolk played their third consecutive low-scoring game, but this time it was the Penguins who prevailed by a 2-1 count on Tuesday night at the Scope in Norfolk. The Pens, who owned the AHL's top record during the regular season (58-21-0-1, 117 points), dropped the first two games of this East Division semifinal at home but have cut that series deficit in half. Game 4 of the series will be on Wednesday night in Norfolk.

Houston Moves On to Second Round With Sweep...

The Houston Aeros will await the winner of the Texas-Milwaukee series after completing a sweep in Peoria on Tuesday night. Houston ousted Peoria in the first playoff round for the third time in the last six seasons and the second time by way of the sweep, which was also accomplished in 2006. The Aeros earned a seven-game triumph in 2009.

SERIES SUBPLOTS.......

* Stars defenseman Philip Larsen has two goals in three playoff games. He had four goals in 54 regular season games.

* Every series in Stars history has ended on the road.

* Milwaukee rookie Gabriel Bourque has a point in all three games and he is second in the AHL playoff scoring race with seven points in three games against Texas.

Playoff Format......

Four rounds, with each round slated as a best of seven series. The top four teams in each division qualify for playoffs. The teams play within their division for the first two rounds. The division winners will meet in the conference finals. The winner of the Western Conference will play the winner of the Eastern Conference for the Calder Cup. In order to take the Calder Cup, a team must win 16 games.

The Calder Cup.......

The coveted Calder Cup has been a motivational force for American Hockey League teams throughout the league's 74-year history. It is one of our sport's greatest challenges and ultimate honors to hoist the

Calder Cup in victory.

The trophy is named for Frank Calder, who served as the National Hockey League's first President from 1917 to 1943. During the 1920's, Mr. Calder was instrumental in guiding hockey into the mainstream of America's major cities including Boston, New York, Detroit and Chicago, while helping in the formation of the American League.

The Calder Cup trophy itself was actually first awarded in 1938 to the Providence Reds for winning the second International-American Hockey League championship. In 1996, George Parsons of the Syracuse Stars was presented the Calder Cup in a ceremony at the Onondaga County War Memorial, as it is believed the Stars never received a trophy for their 1937 championship.
