January 30, 2011 - ECHL (ECHL)
Reading Royals News Release
Reading, PA - The Reading Royals of the ECHL, affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League and the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League, today announced that the team has signed goaltender Daren Machesney ["mah CHEZ knee"] to an ECHL contract. In a separate transaction, forward Ben Gordon has been returned to the Royals from the Rochester Americans of the AHL. In other transactions also announced today, the Royals: (i) activated goaltender Zane Kalemba from the 3-Day Injured Reserve and released him; (ii) released goaltender Brent Troyan as the team's Emergency Back-Up Goaltender; (iii) placed forward Brett Gallant on the 3-Day Injured Reserve; and (iv) placed defenseman Alain Goulet on the 7-Day Injured Reserve.
The Royals claimed the ECHL rights to Machesney (6'0/185) (24) on Thursday after he was waived by the Elmira Jackals. This season, Machesney, a first year pro from Lambeth, Ontario, has been with three teams. He started the season with the Springfield Falcons of the AHL where he played one game in early October. He joined the Victoria Salmon Kings in early November, where he played in four games prior to being traded to the Elmira Jackals. While with the Jackals, Machesney faced the Royals twice, sustaining the loss on both occasions (5-0 on December 12, 2010 and 2-0 on January 9, 2011). A fifth round pick of the Washington Capitals in 2005, Machesney was a member of the Hershey Bears team that captured the Calder Cup Championship in 2009.
Gordon, a third year pro from International Falls, Minnesota, leads the Royals with forty-two points (19g-23a) in thirty-nine games. He registered two assists in three games with the Americans in his most recent stint in the AHL. Kalemba appeared in three games for Reading (1-0-0-0, 3.94 gaa, .896 save %). This concludes Troyan's third stint as the Royals EBG. He served as the back-up goaltender for the team's games against the Greenville Road Warriors on Friday and Saturday. In ten games with the Royals, Gallant, a second year pro from Summerside, Prince Edward Island, has scored a goal, picked up an assist and registered fifty-two penalty minutes, which include five fighting majors. Goulet, a second year pro from Kapuskasing, Ontario, has sixteen points (4g-12a) and twenty-seven penalty minutes in thirty-eight games with Reading this season.
The Royals face the Elmira Jackals today (Sunday, January 30, 2011 @ 4:05 pm) at First Arena in Elmira, New York. The Royals game day broadcast will kick off with the pre-game warm-up show presented by The Works at Wyomissing on the Royals Broadcast Network (WRAW 1340 am in Reading, www.1340wraw.com) at 3:35 pm.
