Bridgeport Islanders News Release

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Jan. 18, 2011)â€" Jordan Caron's goal with 58.9 seconds left in regulation sent the game to overtime and Zach Hamill and Jamie Arniel scored in the shootout as the Providence Bruins defeated the Sound Tigers 3-2 at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport. With the win, Providence improves to 18-19-3-1 overall. The shootout loss puts the Sound Tigers record at 18-19-3-3.

Providence jumped in front just 1:15 into the game. Jeremy Reich skated in along the left side and took a slap shot from above the left circle that knuckled past Nathan Lawson's glove to give Providence an early 1-0 lead.

The Sound Tigers knotted the score just 16 seconds into the second period on the power play. David Ullstrom took control of the puck behind the Providence net and fed Micheal Haley who netted his team-leading 12th goal of the season to tie the score at one. Rob Hisey had a golden opportunity to give the Sound Tigers the lead when he was taken down on a breakaway while shorthanded and awarded a penalty shot. However, Matt Dalton made a stick save on Hisey's attempt to keep the score even at 1-1. The Sound Tigers penalty kill unit worked hard to kill off back-to-back penalties to Brett Motherwell and Mark Wotton, and after two periods the two sides remained tied despite a 23-10 shot advantage for Providence.

The Sound Tigers would take the lead on a delayed penalty call. Rob Hisey was tripped up on a partial breakaway and the puck bounced onto Jason Pitton's stick as he cut toward the Providence net. The newly-signed Pitton roofed the puck over Dalton to give the Sound Tigers a 2-1 lead 1:15 into the third period. The penalty kill continued to preserve the lead as they killed two five-on-three penalties in the final period. However, Jordan Caron tied the game on a wraparound attempt with 58.9 seconds remaining in regulation and the two sides went to overtime tied 2-2.

Each side had chances to earn the extra point in overtime, but both Lawson and Dalton made key saves to send the game to the bonus round. Hamill scored in the first round and Arniel's tally came in the third round. Tony Romano responded as he netted his opportunity in the bottom half of the third round, but Dalton denied Olivier Labelle and Jesse Joensuu to snag the extra point for Providence.

Nathan Lawson made 35 saves for the Sound Tigers and now sits at 3-4-3 this season. Matt Dalton made just 15 saves to earn the win for the P-Bruins.

The Sound Tigers return to action Saturday night when they travel to Worcester to face the Sharks at DCU Center at 7:00 p.m.
