Haunted By Penalties, B-Sens Drop To Hartford In OT

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Riding a modest two-game winning streak, the Binghamton Senators suited up for the second game of their weekend home stand on Saturday night, taking on the Atlantic Division's Hartford Wolf Pack. Both teams found themselves unable to stop the power play, as four of the game's five total goals were conceded with a man advantage. Ultimately, the B-Sens' penalty woes would prove too great, and they would fall to the Wolf Pack in overtime by the score of 3-2.
The B-Sens found themselves in a jam early in the game, committing two penalties in a 23 second span during the first period. With Jim O'Brien and Andre Benoit serving time in the sin bin, the B-Sens dug down defensively, killing Hartford's 5-on-3 power play and shifting the momentum in their favor.
Moments later, Binghamton would convert this energy into a score of its own as Craig Schira was able to capitalize on a centering pass from Roman Wick. Controlling the puck, the B-Sens fed the biscuit to O'Brien on the right side of the Wolf Pack net, who tried his luck against Hartford's Chad Johnson. After O'Brien's initial shot was kicked away, Wick secured the rebound and found Condra open in the slot. With Johnson on his heels, Condra was able to bury the puck in the back of the net with a hard slap shot to put the B-Sens up, 1-0.
The B-Sens dug themselves in a hole on penalties to start the second as well, this time yielding the advantage on a high-sticking call issued to Ryan Keller. Binghamton would be unable to kill this penalty, allowing the game-tying goal to Dale Weise, 9:05 into the period. Opposing center Tim Kennedy attempted an off-balance wrister to Barry Brust's glove side that Brust deflected away, but Weise, who was sitting in front of the net chipped away at the puck until he was able to force it past the Binghamton goaltender to tie the game at 1-1.
Five minutes later, the B-Sens turned the tables and got a taste of their own 5-on-3 power play after Hartford's Lee Baldwin and Chad Kolarik were issued dual penalties. Binghamton would not be denied in their retaliation efforts, taking advantage of the two extra men to score the go-ahead goal, 14:44 into the period. The B-Sens set up the offense in Wolf Pack territory as Bobby Butler sent a pass to Corey Locke in the right corner. Locke controlled the puck and fired a cross-ice feed over to Keller, who wound up and one-timed the puck past Johnson to recapture the lead, 2-1 in favor of the B-Sens.
Penalties continued to haunt the B-Sens in the third period, as they would again allow a tying goal to breach the pipes during a Hartford power play. With 11:52 to play in the third, Kennedy received the puck from Weise behind the Binghamton net and made his way directly towards Brust's left. Kennedy faked a shot under his glove and wrapped the puck around Brust's body to bring the contest back to a stalemate, with the score reading 2-2.
Bad blood between the two teams would culminate in a scuffle with under two minutes remaining in regulation, a sequence which provided the B-Sens with one final opportunity to put the game away courtesy of the power play. Yet, the B-Sens could not capitalize on the opportunity, sending the contest into overtime.
Binghamton fell victim to more of the same gaffes in the overtime period, with penalties proving to be the B-Sens' Achilles Heel in this one. Corey Locke's holding penalty just 39 seconds into OT set the stage for Jeremy Williams' heroics to steal the road win for the Wolf Pack. Not 30 seconds after the penalty, Wade Redden grabbed the puck off a long rebound and slid the puck out to Mats Zuccarello, who set up Williams at the point. Williams fired a slap shot from just outside the circle over the left shoulder of Brust and in, ending the dogfight by the final score of 3-2, in favor of Hartford.
The B-Sens pay a visit to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins tomorrow at 3:05 p.m. Fans can listen live on 680 WINR-AM or 1430 WENE-AM beginning 30 minutes before game time for Countdown to Faceoff with Grady Whittenburg, the voice of the B-Sens.
