Bridgeport Islanders News Release

BRIDGEPORT, Conn - Marc-Andre Cliche scored midway through the first period, goaltender Martin Jones stopped all 27 shots he faced and the Manchester Monarchs shutout the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 1-0 at the Arena at Harbor Yard on Saturday night. With the win, Manchester improves to 11-6-1-1. The Sound Tigers drop to 7-11-0-0.

Manchester jumped on the board midway though the opening period on an impressive individual effort from captain Marc-Andre Cliche. Cliche collected the loose puck in the slot in front of Nathan Lawson. The Monarchs' captain began to fall down, but still managed to backhand the puck past Lawson as he fell to give Manchester a 1-0 lead with 8:40 left in the first period. The Sound Tigers had many chances to tie the game following a John Zeiler roughing penalty at 12:24 of the first period. However, Monarchs goaltender Martin Jones made multiple saves throughout the Sound Tigers' man-advantage, and Manchester held a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.

Jones continued to make big saves to keep the Monarchs in front. Newly-signed defenseman Wes O'Neill made a bid for his first goal as a Sound Tiger midway through the second period. The Sound Tigers entered the zone on a two-on-one as O'Neill joined the play, and took a pass right in front of Jones. The Monarchs' netminder was up to the task as he denied O'Neill's backhand attempt to keep the score 1-0. Olivier Labelle also had a chance to score his first of the season after joining the Sound Tigers on Friday. Labelle skated in on a partial breakaway late in the second period, but Jones used his right pad to stop Labelle and kept the score 1-0 heading to the third.

The Sound Tigers managed just six shots in the final period and Jones was able to stop them all. Bridgeport's best chance of the third came late as the Sound Tigers applied pressure in the Manchester zone. With a loose puck in front of Jones, the Sound Tigers had multiple opportunities to collect the rebound. The Sound Tigers forwards were unable to find the equalizer as Jones earned his first professional shutout and Manchester came away with a 1-0 win.

Nathan Lawson was the hard-luck loser for the Sound Tigers. Lawson had a strong showing in net after some rough outings to start the season and made 26 saves in the loss.

The Sound Tigers will look to rebound tomorrow afternoon when they host the Portland Pirates at 3 p.m.
