Norfolk Admirals News Release
NORFOLK, Va. - Alex Berry scored a pair of goals and Dustin Tokarski made 21 saves as the Norfolk Admirals (9-4-3-1) defeated the Adirondack Phantoms (3-14-2-0), 3-1, on Saturday night at Norfolk Scope Arena. Next week, the Admirals will play the Charlotte Checkers on Monday in Charlotte and on Wednesday at Scope.
The Phantoms went ahead 1-0 on a David Laliberte power play goal 8:05 into the game.
The Admirals tied the game at 1-1 in the final minute of the first period. Juraj Simek sent a looping wrist shot from the right point. Berry deflected Simek's shot past Adirondack goaltender Nic Riopel at 19:16 for his first goal of the contest.
Norfolk took a 2-1 lead late in the second period on a highlight reel goal. Marc-Antoine Pouliot threaded a pass to Berry in the left circle. Berry deked across the slot in front of the goalmouth and curled the puck around Riopel's left leg. His shot caromed off the post and Riopel's back before trickling into the net at 18:19. The goal was Berry's fifth of the season.
Mike Angelidis increased the Admirals' lead to 3-1 just 2:20 into the final frame. Radko Gudas sent a shot from the right point that Riopel stopped. However, Angelidis found the rebound in the left circle and fired it into the net for his third goal of the season.
Dustin Tokarski stopped a Denis Hamel penalty shot attempt midway through the third period to preserve the win.
Dustin Tokarski (22 shots, 21 saves) earned his fourth win of the season. Nic Riopel (31 shots, 28 saves) took the loss.
Norfolk was 0-3 on the power play. Adirondack was 1-4.
With 22 standings points, the Admirals sit in third place in the East Division. The pair kicks off on Monday in Charlotte before heading to Scope on Wednesday night at 7:15 p.m.
