Wolf Pack defeats Senators in OT

Connecticut Whale News Release

Binghamton, NY - Jeremy Williams' power-play goal at 1:03 of overtime gave the Hartford Wolf Pack a 3-2 win over the Binghamton Senators Saturday night at the Broome County Arena.

With the victory, their first overtime triumph in five tries on the year, the Wolf Pack finished the first quarter of their season 6-10-2-2 for 16 points and moved past Bridgeport and out of the cellar in the AHL's Atlantic Division. The Pack man-advantage unit was 3/7 in the game, and they put a season-high 43 shots on net, outshooting the Senators 43-30.

After the Wolf Pack had killed a penalty against Tim Kennedy that carried over from the third period to overtime, former Wolf Pack, and AHL scoring leader, Corey Locke was whistled for a holding infraction at the 39-second mark of the extra session. On the four-on-three power-play, Mats Zuccarello fed a pass off the right-wing boards to Williams at the left point and Williams, a right-hand shot, drilled a one-timer, his 11th goal of the season, past Senator goaltender Barry Brust (40 saves).

Kennedy and Dale Weise had a goal and an assist apiece for the Wolf Pack, and Zuccarello and Wade Redden both chipped in a pair of assists. Chad Johnson made 28 saves to get the win. Erik Condra and Ryan Keller scored for the Senators.

The Wolf Pack outshot the Senators 14-10 in the first period, but found themselves down 1-0 coming out of the session.

After Chad Kolarik hit the post on a shorthanded break-in at 8:07, the Pack had a golden opportunity when Jim O'Brien (boarding) and Andre Benoit (delay of game) took penalties 23 seconds apart, giving Hartford 1:37 of two-man advantage. Brust and the Senators held the Wolf Pack at bay, though, and shortly after the successful kill, Condra gave Binghamton a 1-0 lead at 14:40.

Condra, who had the only goal in a 1-0 Binghamton victory over the Wolf Pack in Hartford October 22 the first time the two teams met, buried the puck from the left side of the slot, after Johnson had made several sharp saves in quick succession.

The two clubs traded power-play goals in the second frame, starting at 9:55, when Weise got his second marker of the year for the Wolf Pack. Weise, in only his second game back in the lineup after a 15-game injury absence, was able to jam the puck out from underneath Brust and over the goal line in a goalmouth scramble. That was the first goal the Wolf Pack scored in nearly four-and-a-half periods against Brust, who shut them out in the Senators' October 22nd victory.

The Wolf Pack found themselves down two men at 14:11, though, when both Kolarik and Lee Baldwin got extra minors out of a tussle in front of the Pack bench. The Senators took advantage 33 seconds later, as Locke fed a perfect cross-slot pass to Keller at the bottom of the left circle, and Keller drove it in before Johnson could get over.

Trailing 2-1 going into the third, the Wolf Pack outshot Binghamton 17-8 in the third frame and tied the score at 8:08 with Eric Gryba in the penalty box for cross-checking. Kennedy stepped to the front of the net from Brust's left and jammed the puck on goal. Brust appeared to make the save, but the puck trickled through him and into the net.

The win evened the Pack's road record on the year at 4-4-0-1. With his game-winning goal, Williams, the Pack's leading point goal (11) and point-scorer (17), now has five goals in his last four games and seven in his last six.
