Winterhawks Fall 5-1 to Calgary

October 14, 2010 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release

The Portland Winterhawks fell 5-1 to the defending WHL champion Calgary Hitmen Wednesday at the Memorial Coliseum.

The Hitmen scored the lone goal of the first period on an unassisted marker by Kris Foucault 8:08 into the game.

Calgary took a 2-0 lead 2:15 into the second period when Misha Fisenko scored on a two-man advantage, then pushed the lead to 3-0 when Cody Beach sprang Cody Sylvester on a breakaway, with Sylvester putting it past Portland netminder Mac Carruth to make it 3-0, a score that would last through the end of the period.

The Hitmen extended their lead to 4-0 at the 10:49 mark of the third period on Sylvester's second goal of the game. The Winterhawks then got on the board with just under five minutes to go when Sven Bartschi notched his seventh goal of the season with a power play marker to cut Calgary's lead to 4-1. Bartschi's seven goals is tops among all WHL rookies, and his 11 points ties him for the league lead among first year players. Late in the game with the Winterhawks having pulled Carruth for an extra attacker, the Hitmen capped the night's scoring with an empty net goal by Foucault with 1:21 remaining, his second of the game.

Carruth made 33 saves on the 37 Hitmen shots he faced, while his counterpart, Calgary's Michael Snider, earned the win with 31 saves on 32 shots.

Portland was 1-5 with the man advantage Wednesday, while killing five of Calgary's six power plays.

Wednesday's game was also the return of former Winterhawks player and coach Mike Williamson, now in his second season as head coach of the Hitmen. He played three seasons with the team from 1991-1994, and after several years as an assistant coach spent eight seasons as the head coach through 2006-07.

The Winterhawks play their next two games on the road, Friday in Kamloops and Saturday in Kelowna. The team returns to home ice next Wednesday when they host the Everett Silvertips at 7 p.m. at the Memorial Coliseum.
