Bridgeport Islanders News Release
Bridgeport, Conn. (Oct. 12, 2007) - For the second straight game, Sound Tigers' goalie Joey MacDonald held the fort long enough for his team's potent offense to click and pick up their second win of the season with a 2-0 victory over the Norfolk Admirals.
With the pleasant return of Sound Tigers' superstar, Jeff Tambellini before the game from the New York Islanders, the Sound Tigers were energized and followed the lead of their sniper.
The teams battled through a scoreless first period, where both MacDonald and Admirals' goalie Ryan Munce each had nine saves. In the second period, the Sound Tigers were able to capitalize on their man-advantage when Tambellini wired a one-timer off the stick of Fran Nielsen that was tipped by Sound Tigers' forward Steve Regier in front to break the scoreless tie and give the Sound Tigers the 1-0 lead at 11:34.
"We've worked on the power-play a lot the past few days in practice to make sure when we have one, we score," Nielsen said. "Steve (Regier) has excellent hands and can tip anything. Adding Tambie (Tambellini) to the point with his incredible shot makes him easy and fun to play with."
With the Sound Tigers holding the slim 1-0 lead, MacDonald would not relinquish his shutout. In the third period, the Sound Tigers were on a five-on-three power-play and set up an identical play with Nielsen feeding Tambellini on his off-wing to allow for another one of Tambellini's one-timers. Tim Jackman did a great job of winning an individual battle in the left corner and sent a pass to Nielsen on the point. Nielsen faked a shot and slid a pass to Tambellini who fired a shot past the glove of Munce for the 2-0 lead, 4:26 into the third period.
MacDonald would make the lead hold up making eight saves in the period for a total of 23 in the game earning his first shutout of the season and first with the Sound Tigers. Munce finished with 27 saves on 29 Sound Tiger shots for the Admirals. The Sound Tigers were a perfect seven-for-seven on the penalty kill making them a perfect 11-11 after two games. The Sound Tigers were 2-8 on the power-play.
"We were able to capitalize on our opportunities tonight and had spectacular goaltending from Joey (MacDonald)," Sound Tigers' head coach Jack Capuano said. "We have to maintain that energy and not get too high with a game tomorrow in Lowell."
