 Mississippi Braves

M-Braves Even Series with Win in Game Two

September 7, 2007 - Southern League (SL1)
Mississippi Braves News Release

The Mississippi Braves came into game two of this Southern League Division Series with their backs against the wall. Mississippi trailed Montgomery 1-0 in the best-of-five series and Chris Mason, the Southern League's Most Outstanding Pitcher, waits on Saturday. Needless to say, Friday night was a must-win for the M-Braves.

Neither team got much going until the bottom of the fourth inning. T.J. Bohn ripped a two-out double off the left field wall to become the first player to reach second base in the game. With Josh Burrus batting, Bohn advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a fielding error by third baseman Patrick Cottrell. As Bohn advanced to third, catcher Josh Arhart threw down to third in an attempt to pick him off. The throw was mishandled by Cottrell and the ball rolled into left field allowing Bohn to score the game's first run.

The M-Braves added two runs to their lead in the sixth. J.C. Holt singled to right to start the inning and when Carl Loadenthal reached on a bunt single, the Braves were in business. Diory Hernandez bunted them over to third and second, respectively, and Bohn was intentionally walked to load the bases. Josh Burrus shot a single through the right side that plated Holt and Loadenthal and gave the M-Braves a 3-0 lead.

Montgomery started their comeback in the seventh. Chris Nowak doubled to start the inning and came in to score on back-to-back groundouts. Gaby Martinez's roller to short moved Nowak to third and Cottrell's grounder to short brought Nowak home. After six-and-a-half, the Braves' lead was down to 3-1.

The Biscuits tied it up in the eighth. Erold Andrus singled to start the inning and Sergio Pedroza, in his first AA at-bat, ripped a 1-0 pitch out to left to tie the game at three.

Josh Burrus came through again in the eighth. Loadenthal doubled off the center field wall to start the inning and Hernandez was hit by a pitch to put two on base. Bohn bunted them over to third and second, respectively, to bring Burrus to the plate with two runners in scoring position. Burrus hit a high chopper to short that scored Loadenthal and when Reid Brignac's throw sailed high, Hernandez scored from second. After an intentional walk to pinch-hitter Mark Jurich, Matt Young reached on a fielder's choice. Young stole second to get into scoring position and Van Pope's single to left-center plated both Burrus and Young. Clint Sammons then ripped a double to left-center that scored Pope from first to push the Braves' lead to 8-3.

Charlie Morton was outstanding for the M-Braves. Morton gave up one run on three hits through seven innings of work and left the game with a 3-1 lead. Sung Ki Jung came on in the eighth and gave up two runs to tie the game. After the M-Braves scored five in the eighth, Jung retired the side in order in the ninth to record his first post season save.

Jake McGee gave up three runs on five hits in five innings of work and left the game trailing 3-0. Nick DeBarr threw two scoreless, Brian Henderson gave up two runs without registering an out, and Evan Meek gave up three runs in an inning. Henderson fell to 0-1 in the post season.

Mississippi and Montgomery will play game three of this best-of-five series tomorrow evening at Montgomery at 4:05 pm. The Braves will send righty James Parr to the hill while the Biscuits will counter with the Southern League's Most Outstanding Pitcher, Chris Mason.
