Braves Rally to Take Series Lead

Moosic, PA - The Richmond Braves beat the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees 6-4 Friday at PNC Field to take a two games to one lead in their best-of-five Governors Cup first round playoff series. The Braves rallied from a 3-0 deficit to move to within one win of a spot in the Governors Cup Finals.

The Yankees took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a solo home run by Andy Cannizaro. Angel Chavez chased a run home with a single to give the Yankees a 2-0 lead after one. Scranton stretched that lead to 3-0 in the second on a solo home run by Raul Chavez. In the third, RBI singles by Mike Rozema and Brent Lillibridge cut the Yankees lead to 3-2. In the home half Angel Chavez scored on a wild pitch to bump the Yankees advantage back to two runs. That lead held until the eighth inning when the Braves erupted for four runs to move in front. Larry Bigbie doubled a pair home to tie the game. He scored on a Doug Clark single to give Richmond a 5-4 lead. The Braves added insurance on an RBI single by Wes Timmons.

Dan Smith picked up the win in relief. Sean Henn took the loss. Joey Devine earned a save. Four Braves relievers each worked a scoreless inning. Gregor Blanco had three of Richmond's 14 hits. Angel Chavez and Juan Francia had two hits each for the Yankees.

The Braves and Yankees meet in Game Four Saturday at 1:30 at PNC Field. Kevin Barry will start on the mound for the Braves against Jeff Karstens. Tickets for the Governors Cup Finals are on sale now. For more information please call the Braves office at 359-4444 or visit www.rbraves.com.
