D.C. United to honor Jaime Moreno, Eddie Pope

Washington, D.C. (September 5, 2007) - D.C. United announced today plans to honor the current MLS goal-scoring leader and one of its former players, considered to be one of the finest defenders in U.S. soccer history, before games against New England, September 9 and Real Salt Lake, September 12. Prior to Sunday's United game with the Revolution, the club will recognize Jaime Moreno. The club's most decorated and accomplished player ever recently broke the MLS all-time goal scoring record, tallying for the 109th time in his illustrious career. On Wednesday, the team will turn its attention to Eddie Pope, who will be honored in a pre-game presentation. Kick-offs are scheduled for 3:00 p.m. ET Sunday and 7:30 p.m. ET Wednesday, respectively.

"United has an established tradition of celebrating the history of our League," said United President and CEO Kevin Payne. "During the next week, we'll be honoring two of our own, as we congratulate two of the greatest players to have ever worn the Black-and-Red."

Additionally, Sunday's game will serve as the second annual "United for D.C. Day," with a portion of every paid ticket set to be donated to the club's non-profit arm. United for D.C. booths, located at Main Gate and A Gate, will provide information on the many initiatives run by the foundation, including United Reads, Kicks for Kids, United Community Grants and United Soccer Club.

On August 22, Jaime Moreno became the League's all-time scoring leader, scoring his 109th goal on a second half penalty kick. The penalty was the 33rd of his career, which is also tops in MLS history. All but two of the Bolivian's goals have come as a member of United. He is the club's all-time leader in goals (107), games played (253), minutes played (20,941), shots (594), shots on goal (341), game-winning goals (24) and multi-goal games (15). He has helped the team to four MLS Cup championships ('96, '97, '99 & '04), the 1998 CONCACAF Champions' Cup and 1998 InterAmerican Cup titles, three Supporters' Shields ('97, '99 & '06) and a U.S. Open Cup championship ('96). He has been named to seven MLS All-Star teams ('97, '98, '99, '00, '04, '05 and '06) and is a four-time winner of the club's MVP award

Pope announced recently that he would retire from Major League Soccer following the end of the 2007 season. The defender spent seven seasons ('96-'02) as a member of United, helping the team to three MLS Cup titles ('96, '97 & '99), the 1998 CONCACAF Champions' Cup and 1998 InterAmerican Cup titles, two Supporters' Shields ('97 & '99) and a U.S. Open Cup championship ('96). He scored perhaps the most memorable goal in MLS history when he notched the sudden death winner in the inaugural MLS Cup '96. Pope was named the League's Defender of the Year in 1997 and was named United's Defender of the Year three times ('96, '97 & '01). He has been named to the MLS All-Star team 11 times (every year except 1996), six of which came as a member of United. Pope has played with the MetroStars (now the New York Red Bulls) and Real Salt Lake since leaving D.C. following the 2002 season.
