Tennessee Smokies News Release

Sevierville, Tennessee -- The Tennessee Smokies Professional Baseball Club, the Class AA Southern League Affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, announce several roster changes prior to the beginning of the 2007 North Division playoffs. The Smokies have added RHP Jose Ceda, LHP Paul Schappert, and OF Eric Patterson to the active roster effective September 4th. Earlier this weekend, the Smokies welcomed back RHP Adalberto Mendez with RHP Sean Gallagher rejoining the Chicago Cubs on Friday August 31st.

In corresponding roster moves, RHP Kevin Hart and OF Sam Fuld have been called up to the 40-man roster of the Chicago Cubs and will join the team today. RHP Grant Johnson has been placed on the disabled list as well, effectively ending his 2007 season.

In preparation for the 2007 Southern League Playoffs, the Smokies will be holding an official team workout at Smokies Park on Wednesday September 4th at 5:30 pm. Players and coaches will be available for interviews either before or after the workout, with media outlets and fans encouraged to attend.

Ceda and Patterson are joining the Smokies for the first time this season. Ceda spent the primary portion of the 2007 with the Class A Peoria Chiefs, beginning the season as a starting pitcher then moving to the bullpen. Patterson, who is the younger brother of Baltimore Orioles and former Chicago Cub Corey Patterson, spent the primary portion of this season with the Class AAA Iowa Cubs. Eric did have a brief stint with the Chicago Cubs this season as well, appearing in seven games for the big-league squad. Patterson was ranked the sixth-best minor league prospect in the Cubs farm system for the 2007 season by Baseball America.
