Portland Drops Series Finale 6-4

TUCSON, Ariz. - Carlos Gonzalez was 1-for-4 with two RBIs and Matt Erickson and Mark Johnson each collected two hits as the Tucson Sidewinders defeated the Portland Beavers 6-4 Thursday night at Tucson Electric Park.

The Beavers return home to begin a four-game homestand with Fresno, Friday at 7:05 p.m. at PGE Park.

Portland starting pitcher Mike Thompson (4-11) picked up his 11th loss of the season, allowing five runs on nine hits over 5 1/3 innings. Royce Huffman was 1-for-2 with two walks and two RBIs for the Beavers (57-83).

Bill Murphy (3-3) earned his third victory of the season, limiting the Beavers to five hits over six innings, striking out four. Brandon Medders recorded his fifth save for Tucson (75-63).

The Beavers jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning when Huffman drove in two runs with a two-out double.

In the top of the second inning, Mike Epping scored from second base on a wild pitch from Tucson starting pitcher Bill Murphy. With runners on the corners and one out, Paul McAnulty drove in the second run of the frame with a single to give the Beavers a 4-0 lead.

The Sidewinders cut the Beavers lead in half in the bottom of the third inning, scoring two runs on two hits off Thompson.

Jamie D'Antona collected his 84th RBI of the season in the bottom of the fifth inning, bringing the score to 4-3.

With the bases loaded and two out in the bottom of the sixth inning, Gonzalez drove in two runs to give the Sidewinders a 5-4 lead.

Tucson loaded the bases again in the bottom of the seventh inning, but managed to score one run on a fielder's choice, bringing the score to 6-4.

Medders set the Beavers down in order in the ninth to seal the victory for the Sidewinders.

NOTES: The Portland Beavers will honor the back-to-back national champion Oregon State Beavers baseball team Saturday at PGE Park.
