Memphis, Tenn. - Memphis jumped on Iowa early with a four-run third inning and cruised to a 6-3 win over the Cubs Thursday night at AutoZone Park.

Starter Mike Smith ignited a four-run rally in the bottom of the third inning with a double and scored when Tagg Bozied drew a bases loaded walk. Edgar Gonzalez knocked in a pair of runs with a single before Danny Ardoin capped the rally with another bases loaded walk. Skip Schumaker added to the Redbirds lead with a two-run homer following Smith's second double of the night in the sixth inning. Iowa's offense came in the fourth inning with back-to-back home runs from Jake Fox and Matt Craig.

Smith was solid on the hill giving up three runs on six hits in 6.2 innings. He fanned seven batters in notching his team-best 11th win of the year. With the win he moves into a tie for the third-most wins by a Redbirds pitcher in a single season. Chris Perez nailed down his seventh save with Memphis striking out two batters in the ninth. Former Memphis Tiger Ryan O'Malley was pegged with the loss after giving up four runs on two hits with six walks in 2.2 innings for Iowa.

Memphis will begin their final series of the season tomorrow night with Military Salute Night. The Redbirds will honor a local fallen soldier in a ceremony prior to the 6:10 p.m. game. St. Louis Cardinals left-hander Mark Mulder is slated to make a rehab start for the 'Birds and will be followed by Mike Maroth, who will be making his second appearance for Memphis.
