Rome Takes Win in Final Home Game

Rome, GA - In their final game home of the 2007 season, the Rome Braves hung on to defeat the Savannah Sand Gnats 6-5 before 3,099 fans at State Mutual Stadium. It was the Braves 40th home victory of the season equaling the record high set in 2005.

The Braves started the scoring in the fourth when Jon Mark Owings singled and scored on a Tyler Flowers double for the 1-0 lead. Ernesto Mejia followed with a single, reached second on an error, and scored on a Concepcion Rodriguez infield single for the 2-0 advantage. In the fifth Rome added another run making the score 3-0 when Brandon Hicks singled and scored on an Owings double.

Rome then added some insurance in the eighth when Flowers walked, Danny Brezeale doubled, and Rodriguez walked to load the bases. Victor Hernandez followed with a three-run double to deep center for the 6-0 score.

Savannah wouldn't go quietly. The Sand Gnats rallied in the ninth scoring five runs highlighted by a Joe Holden three run triple to pull within a run 6-5. The Braves bullpen got the final out to secure the 6-5 victory.

James Curtis picks up the win (3-5) for the Braves pitching five and two thirds of an inning of shutout baseball allowing only three hits while striking out five and issuing three walks. Jeremy Mizell is charged with the loss (3-15) after pitching six innings giving up three runs on nine hits, striking out four without walking a batter. Benino Pruneda earns his first save of the season for the Braves getting the last out of the game.
