Markus Austin To Return To Vermont For 2007-08

August 28, 2007 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Vermont Frost Heaves News Release

South Burlington, Vt.-Markus Austin, the 6'6" wing player whose feisty spirit and opportunistic scoring helped deliver an ABA championship to Vermont in the team's first year, will return to the Frost Heaves for the forthcoming season.

Austin played in 35 games for Vermont a year ago, averaging 7.3 points and 3.2 rebounds per game. He was a critical part of the Frost Heaves' pressure defense, which was tops in the league.

"Markus has only scratched the surface of his potential as a basketball player," said coach Will Voigt. "With his length and athleticism, he could become one of the premier defenders in the ABA. We are all very excited to see his continued development with us this year."

Austin starred at Eastern Michigan from 2001 to 2005, playing in 116 games over a four-year career. The White Plains, N.Y. native brought leadership to the squad, captaining the Eagles for two seasons, and was named the team's Most Valuable Player his sophomore year. He averaged more than 12 points a game to finish his collegiate career as the 11th-leading scorer in school history, racking up more than 1,400 points.

"They always say that the second time around is harder, so I'm looking forward to all the challenges," said Austin. "I know we'll have the target on our backs. I've been focusing on improving my jump shot and stepping it up on defense."

Austin joins forwards John Bryant and Antonio Burks and guard B.J. Robertson as returnees from the team's championship season. Vermont has also signed 6'4" guard Brett Gravitt, a former star at South Alabama and MVP and Defensive Player of the Year in Norway's first division.

The Frost Heaves open their season on Nov. 9 at Montreal. Once again, they will split their 18 home games evenly between Barre and Burlington. Season tickets may be purchased online at www.vermontfrostheaves.comor by calling 802-860-0082. Or check out the Frost Heaves booth at the Champlain Valley Fair through Labor Day, where fans can buy team gear and pick out reserved season seats for the Aud in Barre, Memorial in Burlington, or both.
