Montgomery Biscuits News Release
MONTGOMERY -- The South Division-leading Montgomery Biscuits (39-23; 74-58) used standout pitching from Jake McGee to roll to a franchise record eighth consecutive victory, a 4-0 whitewashing of the visiting Carolina Mudcats' (30-32; 58-74) at Riverwalk Stadium on Sunday night.
In doing so, the Biscuits maintained a two-game lead above the Jacksonville Suns with only eight games remaining in the Southern League's regular season.
The 21-year-old McGee (3-1) struck out nine Mudcats while scattering five singles over seven shutout innings to win his third straight start.
Chris Seddon, the Biscuits' 2005 and 2007 Opening Day starter designated for assignment in June, received the start for Carolina and matched Montgomery's young southpaw with goose eggs through six innings.
In the seventh, however, Seddon (6-10) allowed consecutive one-out singles to Gabriel Martinez, Josh Arhart and Erold Andrus, loading the bases. Josh Asanovich brought home the game's first run with a sacrifice fly off of reliever Jesus Delgado and Fernando Perez beat out an RBI infield single to make the score 2-0. Brooks Badeaux followed with a bouncer off of Delgado's glove. Second baseman Chase Lambin attempted a barehand pickup but deflected the ball into right field, scoring Andrus and pushing Perez to third base. Ben Julianel relieved Delgado and tossed a wild pitch that scored Perez before finally finding the third out of the inning.
Nick DeBarr completed the shutout with scoreless eighth and ninth innings, giving the Biscuits their eleventh consecutive home win against the Mudcats dating back to 2006.
Montgomer and Carolina play the third game of the five-game series on Monday night at 7:05 p.m., with the Biscuits' Chris Mason (14-4, 2.56) dueling with the Mudcats' Gaby Hernandez (9-9, 3.54) in a battle of Southern League All-Stars.
