Chiefs Offense Silenced in 2-1 Loss to Beloit

Peoria, IL- The Peoria Chiefs dropped game three of a four game series with the visiting Beloit Snappers 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at O'Brien Field. The loss drops the Chiefs to 34-28 on the half and keeps them a game behind Cedar Rapids in the Wild Card race with eight games left.

Beloit jumped out to an early lead against Chiefs starter Marco Carrillo in the second inning. The Snappers got the lead off man Danny Berg on after he was hit by a pitch. Joe Benson followed with a single through the right side to put two on with no outs. After a balk by Carrillo, both runners moved up to second and third. Garrett Olson and Danny Santiesteban delivered back-to-back sacrifice flies to put Beloit in front 2-0.

The Chiefs were finally able to break through in the sixth inning against Snappers starter Alex Burnett. After Burnett retired the first two batters of the inning, Marquez Smith lined a base hit through the left side to get on board. Ty Wright followed Smith's two out hit with one of his own to put two runners on. Russ Canzler picked up the third straight two out hit to score Smith and cut the deficit to 2-1 before Matt Canepa grounded out to end the inning.

Peoria had a chance to tie the game in the seventh inning after Brian Leclerc doubled to left to start the inning. Nate Samson executed a sacrifice to move him to third base and put the tying run 90-feet away. Ryne Malone walked to give the Chiefs runners at the corners but Darwin Barney grounded into a double play to end the inning and keep the game 2-1. The Chiefs didn't get a base runner in the eighth or ninth against Snappers closer Anthony Slama who struck out five.

Carrillo tossed six strong innings but gave up four runs on two hits while striking out four. He also hit a batter, walked two and suffered the tough luck loss. Jayson Ruhlman tossed three scoreless innings out of the bullpen and allowed just one hit while striking out one. Burnett picked up the win allowing just one run on five hits over 5 2/3 innings of work. Aaron Craig allowed a hit in a 1 1/3 of relief work and Anthony Slama worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his ninth save of the season.

Gorman's Pub Player of the Games Russ Canzler (1B) - Russ finished the game 1-for-3 with an RBI single that accounted for the only Chiefs run of the game. The RBI for Canzler was his team leading 50th of the season.

Playoff Watch: The top two teams in the division excluding Beloit and Clinton will make the playoffs. With 8 games remaining, the Chiefs are in the Wild Card spot, 4 ½ games behind Quad Cities who beat Cedar Rapids 1-0 in 11 innings Sunday afternoon. The Chiefs are still one game behind Cedar Rapids in the Wild Card race. Kane County is also just one game behind Cedar Rapids and Burlington is 5 ½ games out. The Chiefs have two games (at home) left against Kane County, three games (at home) against Cedar Rapids and two at Quad Cities. The Wild Card team will play Beloit in the first round while the Second Half Champion will play Clinton.

Notes... The second inning single by Beloit ended a streak of 16 1/3 hitless innings by the Chiefs pitchers...Sunday's attendance of 4,156 brings the season total to 241,123 with six games remaining...Leclerc and Smith both extended their season high hitting streaks to nine games...Peoria has grounded into 101 double plays this season...The Chiefs offense has been held to one run or less 12 times in the second half...Peoria is 3-62 in games they trail after the seventh inning...The Chiefs are 2-16 in games in which they score one run...Peoria is 14-14 in games decided by one run, including 0-3 against Beloit...The four game series wraps up on Monday evening at 6:30 PM...Monday is Mountain Dew Half Price Monday with all fans receiving admission for half price...Peoria will send LH Jeremy Papelbon (7-6, 3.23) against LH Tyler Robertson (8-4, 2.10)...The game can be heard live beginning with the pre-game show at 6:15 PM online at www.peoriachiefs.com or on WOAM 1350.
