Braves Take Game Two

August 26, 2007 - Southern League (SL1)
Mississippi Braves News Release

The Mississippi Braves entered Sunday afternoon's game having lost their last five home games dating back to August 9th. What's worse, they hadn't scored at home since August 11th. That all change on Sunday as the M-Braves downed the Birmingham Barons 6-5 to pull even in this five-game series.

It had been 23 innings since the M-Braves scored a run at Trustmark Park, but the Braves snapped that streak in the bottom of the third inning. With one out, Carl Loadenthal shot a single to left-center. T.J. Bohn walked and Diory Hernandez singled home Loadenthal. The throw to the plate was cutoff by third baseman Chris Kelly and his throw, to try to catch Bohn advancing to third, sailed high and into left field. Bohn came in to score and Hernandez moved to third on the play. Mike Rozema then ripped a double to deep center field that scored Hernandez with the Braves third run.

Birmingham got on the board in the top of the fifth when Adam Shabala hit a bomb to right field that landed on top of the Crystal Springs Ford Lincoln Mercury Café.

The Barons tied it up with two runs in the sixth. Cory Aldridge walked and scored on a David Cook triple to start the inning. Cook scored on a Ricardo Nanita sac-fly to tie the game at three.

Mississippi retook the lead in the last of the seventh. Clint Sammons drew a walk to start the inning and moved to second on a wild pitch. Van Pope sacrificed him over to third and J.C. Holt brought him home with a single up the middle. Holt stole second to get into scoring position and scored on Bohn's single to center. Bohn advanced to third on a single by Hernandez and scored on a wild pitch by reliever Josh Fields. After seven, Mississippi led 6-3.

Birmingham got two runs in the ninth, but couldn't tie the score as they fell, 6-5.

Ryan Baerlocher gave up three runs on nine hits and left the game with the score tied at three. Newcomer Nelson Payano threw one scoreless frame to earn his first AA win and Rich Scalamandre gave up two runs in two frames, but held on to earn his first save.

Wes Whisler gave up three runs on seven hits in six innings and did not factor into the decision. John Wesley gave up two runs in two-thirds of an inning and Josh Fields gave up a run in one-third. Tim Bittner kept the Braves off the board in the eighth.

Mississippi and Birmingham will play game three of this five-game series Monday night at Trustmark Park at 7:05. The Braves will send lefty Kelvin Villa to the hill in search of his team-high ninth win while the Barons will counter with lefty Ryan Wing who's going for his seventh W. It'll be another Dollar Dog Monday at Trustmark Park when all hot dogs, excluding foot longs, are only $1.

Mississippi Mentionables:

* The Braves broke out of a 23 inning home-scoring slump with three runs in the third inning. * Ryan Baerlocher had given up only one run in his last 21 innings before the fifth inning today.
