Swing Walk Off with Win in 11th

August 26, 2007 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The Swing of the Quad Cities extended their first-place lead on Sunday while ending the Cedar Rapids Kernels' 10-game winning streak, outlasting the Kernels for a 1-0 win after 11 innings at John O'Donnell Stadium.

Quad Cities (38-23, 76-54) moved back to 3.5 games ahead of the Kernels atop the standings in the Midwest League Western Division, dropping their magic number to qualify for the playoffs to five. Cedar Rapids (35-27, 73-58) lost for the first time since August 14, as their winning streak ended at 10 after a stellar pitcher's duel.

The game was scoreless into the bottom of the 11th when the Swing rallied for the win without the benefit of a hit. Daryl Jones led off the inning with a walk, and as Jose Ramirez grounded out to the third baseman, Jones rounded second to try for the extra base. Mark Trumbo's throw back to third was low and skipped into the stands, allowing Jones to score for the walkoff, 1-0 win.

The late action made a winner out of Kyle Sadlowski (4-3), who threw a scoreless top of the 11th inning to earn the victory. The loss went to Madrigal (5-4), a former outfielder who ranks among the league-leaders with 18 saves in his first season on the mound.

The extra-inning finish stole the show from a great pitcher's duel featuring the two staff aces, as starters Tyler Herron and Sean O'Sullivan went toe-to-toe, each in search of their 11th win of the year.

Herron may have turned in the best performance by a Swing starter this year despite not figuring into the decision. He remains the only Quad Cities hurler to throw seven innings in a ballgame this season after achieving the feat for the second time on Sunday. The 21-year-old right-hander retired 20 of the 22 batters he faced, tossing seven shutout innings while striking out seven, allowing two hits, and issuing no walks. Herron set down 12 batters in a row at one point before a leadoff single in the seventh.

Meanwhile, O'Sullivan went eight scoreless innings and allowed three hits. The 19-year-old from California struck out five and issued one walk.

But as the bullpens took over, the Swing came out on top. Kyle Mura and Kenny Maiques combined for three hitless frames before handing the ball over to Sadlowski, as the four Quad Cities hurlers combined on an 11-inning, three-hit shutout.

The game-winning rally came one inning after Quad Cities narrowly missed a chance to end the contest in the bottom of the 10th. Tony Cruz led off with a base hit and Tyler Henley beat out a bunt-single. After a sacrifice bunt moved runners to second and third, however, reliever Warner Madrigal fired high and away on a squeeze-play that missed Oliver Marmol's bat, leaving pinch-runner Jose Garcia a lame duck heading to the plate. Marmol struck out on the very next pitch to end the threat, extending the ballgame one more inning.
